Livonia has tall task in defending Class B

Eight first round games will open the Class B Championship on Friday. Top seed Livonia will wait for the winner of Greece Odyssey (8) vs. Bath (9). Here is the rundown:

No. 1 seed LIVONIA (17-2)

Player(s) to watch: Senior John Smith (Sr. .477 (31-65) with an on-base percentage of .526 to go with 27 runs scored and 16 RBI. Smith has 31 hits which includes three doubles on the season. Senior Reid VanScoter is 7-0 on the mound with a microscopic 0.16 ERA. . In 42.2 innings of work, the left-hander has fanned 89 and walked 11. At the plate, VanScoter has a .425 batting average with 25 hits, 24 RBI and 19 runs scored.

What to know: Livonia ranks No. 13 in the most recent NYS Class B poll.

No. 2 seed NEWARK (16-4)

Player(s) to watch: Ben Cowles (.540,32 R, 1.50 ERA), Zach DeVito (1.96 ERA), and Ryan Velte (.366).

What to know: Two of Newark’s losses came outside of Section Five.

No. 3 seed HORNELL (12-3)

Player(s) to watch: Jack Henby (CF .477, 19R, 17 RBI .529OBP, .863SLG, 1.393OPS, 6-2B, 4-3B, 1 HR, 10SB), Myer Spitulnik (C .282, 9 RBI), Jake Weyand (1B .267, .441  OBP),  Joe Gibson (DH .360),  Jake Dunn (P 32.2 IP, 35 K, 2.36 ERA), and  Matt Dessena (P 27.1 IP,  32K , 2.82 ERA).

Trend: Hornell, ranked No. 10 in the most recent NYS Class B poll, has won nine of 10 games heading into Sectionals. Hornell and top-seed Livonia split two meetings during the regular season.

No. 4 seed WELLSVILLE (15-5)

Player(s) to watch: Joe Tronetti, Tyler Smith, and Kolten Martin.

What to know: Wellsville head coach Dennie Miles recently notched career win No. 700. The Lions rank No. 19 in most recent NYS Class B poll.

No. 5 seed ATTICA (13-4)

Player(s) to watch: Sam Cusmano (Jr.P 5-0).  Trent Rumley (8th P 3-1/30H, 22SB), Kyle Casey (Sr. Captain 20RBI, .481), Owen Thompson (Sr. Captain .490),  Joe Aguglia (Jr. .423, 27R) and Matt Travis (P 2-1, 2.00ERA).

What to know: Attica finished as Genesee Region League division champs this year.

N0. 6 seed WAYLAND-COHOCTON (13-7)

Player(s) to watch: Michael Schumacher (.439) and Eythan Briggs (1.58 ERA).

What to know: Wayland-Cohocton led their with 210 stolen bases and upset Wellsville to close the regular season.

No. 7 seed MIDLAKES (10-8)

Player(s) to watch: Austin Avanzato (.358), Devin Kelly (.354), and Ezra Maslyn (1.35 ERA).

Trend: Midlakes closed out the regular season with a road win over Honeoye.

No. 8 seed GREECE ODYSSEY (9-9)

Player(s) to watch: Jeff Wilson (.407, 12RBI, 9-2B, 2-3B, 2HR), Pat Bigham (.347, 13RBI, 8-2B, 1HR/5-1, 1.76, 47.2IP, 63K), and Vince Alongi (.276, 11RBI).

Trend: Odyssey lost three of four to end the regular season.

No. 9 seed BATH-HAVERLING (10-7)

Player(s) to watch: Matthew Binkowski (.500) and Noah Hockaday (.428, 2.29 ERA), Logan Strong (.404) and Griffin Yastremski (.321/5HR).

What to know: Bath-Haverling won its last five regular season and has a team batting average of .342 with 52 extra-base hits.

No. 10 seed PALMYRA-MACEDON (8-9)

Player(s) to watch: Grant LaDue and Nate Tuper.

What to know: Pal-Mac fell to Midlakes, their first-round opponent twice this season.

No. 11 seed PENN YAN (9-10)

Player(s) to watch: Brandon Sherman (.259) and Brennan Prather (.385)

What to know: Sherman finished 3-for-3 with four RBI in a recent loss to Hornell.

No. 12 seed MYNDERSE (8-9)

What to know: Mynderse closed the regular season with a 7-6 victory over Newark.

No. 13 seed UPREP (4-4-2)

What to know: Closed the regular season with a 4-0 victory over Bishop Kearney.

No. 14 seed WATERLOO (8-11)

Player(s) to watch:  Jake Webb (.302) and Nick Webb (.238).

What to know: Beat South-Seneca/Romulus 4-3 in non-conference game on Saturday.

No. 15 seed DANSVILLE (3-12)

Player(s) to watch: Ryan Conklin (.333) and Bryan Allen (.316).
