BLOOMFIELD, N.Y. – Spencer McKean and four other seniors for Bloomfield played their last home game as a Bomber. When it comes to senior night, everyone plays for the seniors who have been on that varsity team for one or more years. In McKean’s mindset, he wanted to win in his final home game as a Bomber. He made sure he and his team achieved that.
McKean went 4-for-5 with three singles and a double to lead the Bombers past the Wildcats of Marcus Whitman 20-10.
“It was a struggle for about half of the regular season,” McKean said. “I wasn’t getting the numbers I wanted. Coach told me one day in practice to adjust my batting stance. I followed through with it and ever since that one practice, I’ve been getting the results I’ve wanted.”
Other solid performances came from David Fischer who drove in a pair of runs. Ben Brocklebank was able to touch home plate five times, Trevor Robinson touched home three times and both Sam Brocklebank and Evan Miller made it home twice.
In the top of the first inning, Marcus Whitman jumped off to an early start leading 5-0 after the first inning. Bloomfield’s coach takes the ball out of his starting pitcher hands he gives the ball to senior Eoin Joyce. Joyce managed to get out of the inning by not giving up any more runs. Joyce threw for four more innings after that. He recorded six strikeouts and only gave up two runs.
Bloomfield redeemed themselves all throughout the remainder of the game. Everyone contributed in the line-up offensively for Bloomfield to get one game above .500 (7-6) on the year.
“This was a big game for us to win today. We won this game for our seniors,” said, Bloomfield coach Mark Jacobs. “We need to keep this up heading into sectionals.”
Bloomfield’s next game is Wednesday, May, 18th as they go to Wayne County to battle Red Creek. First pitch is at 4:30 p.m.
Parker Smith went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a single for the Wildcats. He also drove in four runs. Logan Dennis threw for four innings but gave up nine runs on the mound.
Marcus Whitman’s (5-8) next game is Saturday, May 13th at Lyons. First pitch is at 11 a.m.
