CHICAGO, IL– A pair of home runs by JaCoby Jones and Nick Castellanos in the second inning put Detroit up 5-1, leading the Tigers to the win over the Chicago White Sox.
Ian Kinsler went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, a double and two runs scored for the Tigers. Melky Cabrera finished 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and one runs scored for the White Sox.
Justin Verlander started for the Tigers, going 6.1 innings with two runs on six hits, two walks and 10 strikeouts. Jose Quintana got the start for the White Sox, allowing six runs on five hits, three walks and two strikeouts in five-and-one third innings.
Game two of the series will be on Wednesday 2:10 p.m.
NEW YORK YANKEES (1-1) 5
TAMPA BAY RAYS (1-1) 0
TAMPA BAY, FL– Ronald Torreyes, starting at shortstop in place of the injured Didi Gregorius, sparked New York’s offense with his second career home run, helping the Yankees to the shutout win over the Tampa Bay Rays.
Chase Headley gave the Yankees a 2-for-4 night with a home run, a pair of RBI and one run scored.
C.C. Sabathia threw five innings for the Yankees, allowing three hits, walking two and striking out two. Jake Odorizzi made his first start of the season for the Rays, going six innings and giving up four runs on seven hits, two walks and four strikeouts.
The rubber match will be on Wednesday at 7:10 p.m.
HOUSTON ASTROS (2-0) 2
SEATTLE MARINERS (0-2) 1
HOUSTON, TX– With no outs in the bottom of the sixth, Marwin Gonzalez hit a solo shot to give Houston a one-run lead, which held up to give the Astros the win over the Seattle Mariners.
Gonzalez and Brian McCann each went 1-for-3 with a home run for the Astros. Danny Valencia picked up a pair of ht in four at bats for the Mariners, driving in the only run.
Lance McCullers Jr. tossed six innings for the Astros, giving up one run on five hits and two walks, striking out seven. The Mariners tabbed Hisashi Iwakuma to start, going six innings and surrendering two runs on four hits and three walks with a pair of strikeouts.
Game three of four will take place Wednesday at 8:10 p.m.
CHICAGO CUBS (1-1) 2
ST. LOUIS CARDINALS (1-1) 1
ST. LOUIS, MO– Koji Uehara, Pedro Strop and Wade Davis combined to shutout the St. Louis Cardinals over the last three innings, securing the win for the Chicago Cubs.
Jason Heyward drove in one run on his lone hit in four at bats.
2015 Cy Young Award winner Jake Arrieta started for the Cubs, giving up one unearned run and four hits, while walking two and striking out six in six innings. Adam Wainwright provided the Cardinals with five innings, two runs, three hits and two walks allowed, but struck out six.
The Cubs and Cardinals will finish the series on Wednesday at 1:45 p.m.
COLORADO ROCKIES (2-0) 6
MILWAUKEE BREWERS (0-2) 5
MILWAUKEE, WI– Gerardo Parra drove in three runs on his third inning double, part of a four-run inning which propelled the Colorado Rockies over the Milwaukee Brewers.
Parra finished at 3-for-5 with three RBI and one run scored. Travis Shaw drove in two on a pair of doubles. Shaw scored once.
Tyler Anderson tossed five-and-two-thirds innings for the Rockies while letting up five runs on eight hits and one walk, tallying eight strikeouts on the day. Zach Davies made his first start of the season, going four-and-one-third innings and being credited with allowing six runs, nine hits, four walks and with striking out one.
The two will meet again on Wednesday at 8:10 p.m. for game three of four.
CLEVELAND INDIANS (2-0) 4
TEXAS RANGERS (0-2) 3
ARLINGTON, TX– Carlos Santana led off the game with 367 foot solo home run, setting off the Cleveland offense and leading the Indians over the Texas Rangers.
Santana topped the Indians at 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Joey Gallo matched Santana’s performance for the Rangers, also going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, as well as a home run of his own.
Carlos Carrasco returned to the mound for the Indians, throwing five-and-two-thirds of two run, four hit, one walk and seven strikeout ball. Martin Perez was chosen to face-off against Carrasco, pitching six innings and giving up three runs off of five hits and four walks, but also struck out four.
The Indians will go for the sweep on Wednesday at 8:05 p.m.
SAN DIEGO PADRES (1-1) 4
LOS ANGELES DODGERS (1-1) 0
LOS ANGELES, CA– Yangervis Solarte singled and homered in his first two at bats, driving in two runs and leading the San Diego Padres to a win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Solarte ended the day at 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored for the Padres.
Clayton Richard gave the Padres eight shutout innings, striking out five, walking two and giving up five hits over the course of the day. Kenta Maeda got the game two start for the Dodgers, leaving the game after five innings allowing three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out four.
The series is set to continue Wednesday at 10:10 p.m.
SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (1-1) 8
ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS (1-1) 4
PHOENIX, AZ– Brandon Crawford hit a solo home run to open the fifth inning, sparking a five run inning that carried the San Francisco Giants over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Gorkys Hernandez led the Giants by going 2-for-5 with four RBI, one run scored and one walk. Jake Lamb put up a 1-for-3, two RBI, two run and one walk night for the Diamondbacks.
Johnny Cueto made his first start of the year, giving the Giants five innings and surrendering four runs on six hits and two walks, with five strikeouts. Patrick Corbin let up three runs (two earned), seven hits, two walks and struck out one over four innings.
The Giants will play two more games in the desert in the opening series of the year, with the next coming Wednesday at 9:40 p.m.
LOS ANGELES ANGELS (1-1) 7
OAKLAND ATHLETICS (1-1) 6
OAKLAND, CA– Danny Espinosa smacked a three-run home run in the top of the ninth, bring Los Angeles back from a 6-4 deficit, leading to the Angels win over the Oakland A’s.
Espinosa gave the Angels a 1-for-4, three RBI and one run scored night. Jed Lowrie went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored for the A’s.
Matt Shoemaker got the day two start for the Angels, responding with a five inning, two run, four hit, three walk and four strikeout night. Sean Manaea took the bump for the A’s, picking up six innings of four run, five hit, two walk and four strikeout baseball.
The series resumes on Wednesday at 10:05 p.m.
