ST.LOUIS, MO– Randal Grichuk hit a bases loaded, walk-off single to left center in the bottom of the ninth, giving the Cardinals the Opening Day win over the reigning World Series champion Cubs.
Grichuk went 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and one run scored for the Cardinals. Willson Contreras also went 2-for-4 with three RBI, having hit a game-tying three run home run in the top of the ninth, and one run scored for the Cubs.
Carlos Martinez started for the Cardinals, going seven-and-one-third shut out innings, giving up six hits and striking out 10. Jon Lester started on the mound for the Cubs, surrendering one run on seven hits and one walk, with seven strikeouts over five innings.
The Cubs and Cardinals will continue their series Tuesday at 8:15 p.m.
ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS (1-0) 6
SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (0-1) 5
GLENDALE, AZ– Chris Owings singled to right field to bring home Daniel Descalso, who had tied the game earlier, to give the Diamondbacks a walk-off win over the Giants.
A.J. Pollack finished the game 3-for-5 with one home run, two RBI and two runs scored for the Diamondbacks. The Giants’ Madison Madison Bumgarner set an MLB record for home runs by a pitcher on Opening Day, going 2-for-2 with two round trippers.
Zack Greinke got the start for the Diamondbacks, lasting five innings and allowing two runs on four hits and two walks, adding four strikeouts. Bumgarner threw seven innings for the Giants, being credited with three runs on six hits with 11 strikeouts.
Game two of the four-game series will be on Tuesday at 9:40 p.m.
TAMPA BAY RAYS (1-0) 7
NEW YORK YANKEES (0-1) 3
TAMPA BAY, FL– Evan Longoria and Logan Morrison hit home runs in back-to-back innings to help the Rays to a blowout win over the Yankees on Opening Day.
Morrison led the Rays’ offense at 3-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored. The Yankees picked up a 3-for-4 game from Chase Headley, who also scored twice.
Chris Archer took the mound to start for the Rays, finishing with two runs allowed on seven hits and one walk, while striking out five, over seven innings of work. Masahiro Tanaka was chosen as the Yankees’ starter, being forced two-and-two-thirds innings after letting up seven runs on eight hits and two walks, striking out three.
The series will resume Tuesday at 7:10 p.m.
