No. 14 Duke 79 Clemson 72
NEW YORK– Jayson Tatum and Frank Jackson each scored 20 points as the Blue Devils (24-8) beat Clemson (17-15) in the second round of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament. In a game where the ACC’s leading scorer, Luke Kennard, was struggling to find any sort of rhythm, the two freshmen were a key reason why it was tied at halftime.
Fighting to keep their odds of making the NCAA tournament alive, the Tigers were not willing to go down easily. After Duke once held a 13 point lead in the second half, Marcquise Reed (13 points) had drilled a three pointer with just under three minutes to play to cut the lead to one. It was not enough though as Kennard made his presence known with 8-of-11 shooting in the final half and two clutch jumpers near the end of the contest.
The Blue Devils advanced to the ACC tournament quarterfinals and will take on Louisville Thursday night.
No. 21 Virginia 75 Pittsburgh 63
NEW YORK– Kyle Guy matched a career high with 20 points en route to helping the Cavaliers (22-9) advance to the ACC quarterfinals for the sixth straight season. Assisting him was London Perrantes who netted 13 points in the second half.
After scoring only 42 points against Virginia less than a week ago, the Panthers (16-17) surpassed that with 13:08 left in the game. Leading Pittsburgh in scoring were seniors Jamel Artis with 18 points and Michael Young with 14.
With the win, Virginia will go on to play No. 22 Notre Dame Thursday night at the Barclays Center with a conference semifinals birth on the line. After starting off 12-3, the season has come to an end for Pittsburgh who finishes with their first losing campaign since 1999-2000.
