Nahziah Carter led five in double figures, and the Bishop Kearney Kings used a big third quarter to beat the Gates-Chili Spartans, 94-72 in the Section Five Class AA opening round.
Carter scored 28, grabbed eight rebounds, and the Kings outscored the Spartans 27-12 in the third stanza.
Patrick Thomas paced the Kings early with nine of his 18 points and five rebounds as BK led 21-15 after the first quarter.
The Kings Jamal Fennell scored 10 points in the second quarter, but Gates-Chili’s Keith Slack hit three 3-pointers to keep the Spartans within striking distance. Kearney led 45-36 at halftime.
Slack poured 19 of his game-high 31 points in the fourth quarter as the Spartans cut the deficit to nine but could not get any closer.
Thomas registered a double-double with a game-high 12 rebounds. Sheldon Adams added 14 points. Tyke’r Harley chipped in 11.
Damon Payton added 14 for Gates-Chili (7-14). Zac Cowell chipped in 11.
Bishop Kearney (15-6) has won three straight and six of seven. The fifth-seeded Kings advance to meet No. 4-seed Aquinas. The two teams have combined to win 21 sectional titles. The Li’l Irish have won two straight AA crowns including last year when Aquinas took the state championship before advancing to the Federation final.

Bishop Kearney took the 2013 AA1 championship its third straight Section Five crown. The Kings went on to win the 2013 state title.
A 5 pm start time is scheduled Saturday at Wegman-Napier Complex at Aquinas.
