UNC’s Williams wins 800th in victory over Syracuse

No. 9 NORTH CAROLINA 85 SYRACUSE 68
Joel Berry II hit a pair of threepoint shots to help the North Carolina Tar Heels go on a 12-0 run early in the game to take a lead they did not relinquish, and head coach Roy Williams earned his 800th career win. Williams is the second fastest (1,012 games) coach to reach 800 wins (Adolph Rupp, 972 games).

Though they shot 29.2 percent from three (ranked 69th in the country with a 37.7 average) and 53.3 percent from the free throw line (ranked 129th at 71.2 percent), the Tar Heels relied on their rebounding (top-ranked 46.16 per game) grabbing 44 boards.

Isaiah Hicks scored 20 points while Justin Jackson (19 points, 10 rebounds) and Kennedy Meeks (15 points, 12 rebounds) both had double-doubles for the Tar Heels. Tyler Lydon netted 26 points and pulled in seven rebounds for the Orange.

The Tar Heels improve to 17-3 and the Orange drop to 11-8.

No. 1 VILLANOVA 76 SETON HALL 46
Kris Jenkins dropped 16 points and grabbed four rebounds for Villanova (18-1).

No. 2 KANSAS 76 IOWA STATE 72
Frank Mason III of Kansas (17-1) scored 16 points and collected six rebounds. Monte Morris posted a 23-point,  seven-rebound, seven-assist and four-steal night for Iowa State (11-6). Kansas has won its last 16 games.

No. 7 CREIGHTON 72 No. 22 XAVIER 67
Creighton’s (18-1) Marcus Foster paced the Blue Jays with 15 points, three steals and two assists. Xavier’s (13-5) Trevon Bluiett (17 points, six rebounds and three assists) and Rashid Gaston (17 rebounds, 12 points) helped keep the game close for the Musketeers.

No. 13 BUTLER 88 MARQUETTE 80
Kelan Martin led Butler (16-3) with 22 points and seven rebounds for the game.  Markus Howard score 26 points and grab a pair of rebounds for Marquette (12-6).

OTHER:

PROVIDENCE 74 GEORGETOWN 56

Emmitt Holt (Webster Schroeder) scored 11 points and pulled down three rebounds for Providence.

VERMONT 71 NEW HAMPSHIRE 59

Anthony Lamb (Greece Athena) scored 13 points and grabbed one rebound for Vermont.
