No. 18 Butler hands No. 1 Villanova first defeat of season

Wednesday’s Top 25 action.

No. 18 BUTLER 66 No. 1 VILLANOVA 58

The Butler Bulldogs outscored the Villanova Wildcats 39-27 in the second half to hand them their first loss of the season and snap a 20-game win streak.

Butler, who went into the game shooting 70.5 percent from the free throw line and was ranked 138th in the nation, shot a perfect 100 percent (15-15) from the charity stripe against Villanova.

Andrew Chrabascz paced Butler with 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Sophomore guard Jalen Brunson led Villanova with 23 points, two assists and two steals.

Butler improves to 13-2 and Villanova drops to 14-1.

No. 2 BAYLOR 65 IOWA STATE 63

Junior forward, Johnathan Motley led Baylor (14-0/2-0 Big 12) with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Nazareth Mitrou-Long, a senior guard for Iowa State (9-4), topped the Cyclones with 17 points, four rebounds and three assists.

No. 8 DUKE 110 GEORGIA TECH 57

Freshman forward Jayson Tatum netted 19 points, along with six rebounds, four assists and four steals for Duke (13-2). Freshman forward Harry Giles contributed 10 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double.

No. 23 NOTRE DAME 77 No. 9 LOUISVILLE 70

Senior guard Steve Vasturia scored 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Notre Dame (13-2). Junior forward Bonzie Colson added 18 points and 14 rebounds. Sophomore guard Donovan Mitchell scored 20 points, and collected five steals, five assists and four rebounds for Louisville (12-3).

No. 10 CREIGHTON 85 ST. JOHN’S 72

Freshman center Justin Patton paced Creighton (14-1) with 25 points, nine rebounds and four assists. St. John’s (8-8) top scorer was freshman guard Marcus LoVett with 23 points.

PITTSBURGH 88 No. 11 VIRGINIA 76 in OT

Jamel Artis led Pittsburgh (12-3) with 24 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Junior guard Devon Hall‘s 15 points and nine rebounds led Virginia (11-3).

No. 15 OREGON 83 WASHINGTON 61

Oregon’s (14-2) top scorer was sophomore guard Tyler Dorsey with 28 points, and junior forward Jordan Bell added 10 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double.

NORTH CAROLINA STATE 104 No. 21 VIRGINIA TECH 78

Freshman guard Dennis Smith Jr. recorded a triple-double (27 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists) for NC St. (12-3). Junior forward Abdul-Malik Abu contributed a double-double (20 points and 11 rebounds).

OTHER:

RICHMOND 80 FORDHAM 72

Redshirt junior guard Antwoine Anderson (Bishop Kearney) scored seven points and dished three assists for Fordham.

PROVIDENCE 76 GEORGETOWN 70

Junior forward Emmitt Holt (Webster Schroeder) scored 17 points and grabbed five rebounds for Providence.

SMU 79 TEMPLE 65

Freshman guard Quinton Rose (Bishop Kearney) scored 14 points and added an assist and rebound for Temple.
