No. 1 Nova wins battle with Irish

Saturday’s Top 25 action.

No. 1 VILLANOVA 74 No. 23 NOTRE DAME 66

Senior guard Josh Hart led Nova with a double-double of 37 points and 11 rebounds. Notre Dame’s junior guard Matt Farrell led the team with 18 points and six assists. Nova remains undefeated at 10-0,while Notre Dame drops to 9-1.

No. 2 UCLA 102 MICHIGAN 84

UCLA’s TJ Leaf, a freshman forward, netted 21 points and pulled in eight rebounds to lead the team. Michigan was led by senior guard/forward Zak Irvin with 18 points, seven assists and five rebounds. UCLA remains undefeated at 10-0, while Michigan takes its third loss of the year, now 7-3.

No. 3 KANSAS 89 NEBRASKA 72

Kansas’ leader was senior guard Frank Mason III with 18 points and seven assists in the win. Nebraska’s Tai Webster, a senior guard, led his team with 22 points and five assists. Kansas jumps to 9-1 and Nebraska is now even at 5-5.

No. 5 DUKE 94 UNLV 45

Grayson Allen, a junior guard, dropped 34 points and graduate forward Amile Jefferson got a double-double (10 points and 12 rebounds) to lead Duke. Sophomore guard Jalen Poyser scored 16 points to lead UNLV. Duke improves to 10-1, while UNLV falls to 5-4.

No. 8 GONZAGA 61 AKRON 43

Przemek Karnowski, a senior center for Gonzaga, scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the team. Senior center Isaiah Johnson dropped 11 points and nine rebounds to top Akron. Gonzaga goes to 10-0 to stay undefeated, while Akron falls to 7-3.

No. 9 INDIANA 103 HOUSTON BAPTIST 61

Junior guard James Blackmon Jr. topped Indiana with 18 points, along with three rebounds. Sophomore center Thomas Bryant (Bishop Kearney) scored nine points, grabbed 13 rebounds and had four blocks for the Hoosiers. Senior forward Colter Lasher led Houston Baptist with 18 points, four rebounds and three assists. Indiana is now 8-1 and Houston Baptist is 3-5.

No. 11 LOUISVILLE 102 TEXAS SOUTHERN 71

Louisville had six players, including the entire starting five, score in double figures, but the edge goes to junior forward Jaylen Johnson, who scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Though freshman guard Demontre Jefferson led the team with 27 points, red-shirt sophomore Derrick Griffin was Texas Southern’s top performer with 15 points and 26 rebounds. Louisville win’s its ninth and is 9-1, while Texas Southern drops below .500 at 4-5.

No. 13 XAVIER 77 UTAH 69

Xavier got 18 points from both junior guards Trevon Bluiett and JP Macura, as well as a double-double (11 points, 14 rebounds) from senior forward RaShid Gaston. Utah also had a player with a double-double (11 points, 10 rebounds), junior forward Kyle Kuzma, and also were led in points by freshman guard Devon Daniels with 19. Xavier improves 8-2 and Utah falls to 6-2.

No. 15 WEST VIRGINIA 90 VMI 55

Twenty points from junior guard Daxter Miles Jr. and a double-double (11 points, 10 rebounds) from senior forward Brandon Watkins propelled West Virginia. Senior guard QJ Peterson led VMI with 17 points. West Virginia moves to 8-1, while VMI continues to seek its second win at 1-7.

No. 16 BUTLER 75 No. 22 CINCINNATI 65

Junior forward Kelan Martin scored 20 points and grabbed four rebounds to lead Butler. Troy Caupain, a senior guard, scored 22 points for Cincy while junior forward Gary Clark added 14 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double. Butler sits at 9-1 and Cincy takes its second loss of the year at 7-2.

No. 17 WISCONSIN 93 MARQUETTE 84

Senior forward Nigel Hayes dropped 17 points, nine rebounds and four assists to top Wisconsin. Freshman guard Markus Howard scored 22 points and grabbed three rebounds for Marquette. Wisconsin improves to 9-2 and Marquette falls to 7-3.

No. 18 PURDUE 77 CLEVELAND STATE 53

Caleb Swanigan, a sophomore forward, picked up a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds for Purdue. Cleveland State’s sophomore guard Rob Edwards narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with 10 points and nine rebounds. Purdue jumps to 8-2 and Cleveland State loses its sixth, sitting at 3-6.

No. 20 ARIZONA 79 MISSOURI 60

Freshman guard Rawle Alkins led Arizona with 19 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore forward Kevin Puryear led Missouri with 11 points and seven rebounds. The win is Arizona’s eighth, putting them at 8-2, and Missouri drops to 5-4.

UNC-WILMINGTON 81 ST. BONAVENTURE 80

Graduate forward Chinoso Obokoh (Bishop Kearney) did not play for Bonaventure.

TEMPLE 74 DEPAUL 65

Freshman guard Quinton Rose (Bishop Kearney) scored 12 points and grabbed three rebounds for Temple.

PROVIDENCE 75 UMASS 69

Junior forward Emmitt Holt (Webster Schroeder) dropped 18 points and pulled six rebounds for Providence.

NORTHEASTERN 59 VERMONT 57

Freshman forward Anthony Lamb (Greece Athena) netted six points, along with grabbing two rebounds and collecting two blocks for Vermont.

BUFFALO 87 COPPIN STATE 52

Red-shirt sophomore Dontay Caruthers (East High School) scored six points, as well as collecting three assists and two rebounds for Buffalo.

MANHATTAN 60 FORDHAM 53

Red-shirt junior guard Antwoine Anderson (Bishop Kearney) scored eight points, adding three rebounds, three steals and two assists for Fordham.
