SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After winning the New York Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game 1-0 in 2014 and 8-6 last season, the West was able to keep their streak alive Thursday night at Onondaga Community College with a 7-5 victory over the East.
Trailing 4-1 entering the seventh inning, the West rallied to take the lead with a four-run frame.
David Yanni (Olean/University of Pittsburgh) hit a two-run triple before scoring on an error to tie the game. Jacob Sims (Wellsville/Roane State Community College) knocked in Judah Wollenburg (Genesee/University of Rio Grande) with the go-ahead run to cap the inning.
Yanni knocked an RBI-single in the eighth and David Hollins (Olean/St. Bonaventure University) delivered a solo home run in the ninth to add insurance runs for the West.
An error, Ricky Sisto (Rome/University of Miami) RBI-triple and RBI-single by Ryan Quinn (Rome/Colby College) in the bottom of the fourth gave the East an early lead, but the bullpen couldn’t hang on.
A few hours after winning the Home Run Derby, Aaron Phillips (Olean/St. Bonaventure University) found himself starting…on the mound. The 6-foot-5 righty from Buffalo pitched a perfect first inning.
Steven Witkowski (Cortland/University of Massachusetts-Boston) started for the East and pitched a hitless inning.
Genesee’s Breton La Rose (Sacred Heart) struck out the side in a scoreless sixth for the win. Hornell’s Jake Miller (Lackawanna) came out of the bullpen with the tying run at the plate and picked up the save. Rochester’s Luke Chevalier (Northern St.) struck out the side in the fifth.
Quinn collected two of the East’s five hits including a leadoff triple in the ninth.
Hornell’s Mike Wick (Webster) finished 2-for-3 with a run scored. Wellsville’s Max Franzone (Dominican) connected on a solo home run.
The Olean Oilers swept the All-Star awards this year. Phillips started by becoming the second Oiler to ever win the Home Run Derby along with Hollins.
Yanni earned the Tom Kenney Golden Glove Award for his spectacular defense at second base. He also went 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBI.
The Bob Belizzi Big Stick Award for the best offensive performance went to Hollins after he went 2-for-3 with a home run.
