ROME, N.Y. — Usually facing a 6-1 deficit can be pretty demoralizing, especially as the game drags on. The Rome Generals, however, had no issue staying level-headed and chipping away at the Wellsville Nitros’ lead Friday night.
Sean Tremholm (Binghamton Univeristy) hit the go-ahead two-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Rome a lead it would never lose. Maurizio DeVita (St. Thomas Aquinas College) struck out the side in the top of the ninth to secure the win for the Generals 9-7 over the Nitros in New York Collegiate Baseball League Action at Delutis Field.
Wellsville took advantage of sloppy defense and unloaded for a six-run top of the fourth highlighted by Carson Shrode’s (University of Tennessee-Martin) three-run home run and Cam Cook’s (Nichols College) two-run double.
Neither starting pitcher factored into the decision as both Rome’s Mitchell Donahue (Montreat College) and Wellsville’s Patrick Berthelette (Marymount University) allowed six runs and did not make it past the fifth inning.
The battle of the bullpens, however, was won by Rome as five pitchers combined to limit the Nitros to one run on four hits in five innings while striking out seven.
Wellsville’s bullpen fell apart allowing three runs in as many innings while walking four.
Ryan Quinn (Colby College) led the Generals offensively going 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs and a stolen base.
Shrode led the Nitros with a 3-for-4 performance including a home run, double, 3 RBIs and two runs scored.
Rome (7-14) travels to Genesee for a meeting with the Rapids (7-15).
The Nitros (7-14) return home to prepare for the Rochester Ridgemen (5-17).
