ROME, N.Y– As David Erosa (Adrian College) forced the final out of the game, it became official: the Rome Generals are in the win column in the New York Collegiate Baseball League.
The Generals took advantage of sloppy defense to earn their first franchise win after topping the Sherrill Silversmiths 7-2 at Delutis Field in Rome.
After dropping their first game to the Syracuse Jr. Chiefs, Rome used a six-run third inning to blow past Sherrill and earn the team’s first win.
Three hits, three errors and a straight steal of home by Mark DiLeo (Mercyhurst College) gave the Generals the 6-0 advantage in the bottom of the third.
Darren Hasch (Ft. Scott Community College) hit a two-run single for the Silversmiths in the top of the fourth, but it was not enough to combat Rome’s outburst.
Coby Smith (Dean College) dominated on the mound for the Generals. He limited Sherrill to two runs (neither earned) in five innings and struck out two.
Daniel DePaoli (Hamilton College) suffered the loss after allowing six runs in three innings. The 6’4 junior from Brewster, N.Y., struck out five but walked four.
DiLeo went 1-for-3 with a triple, two runs and a walk to go along with his steal of home for Rome.
Sherrill’s five errors were the most by one team in a game until the Cortland Crush and Jr. Chiefs combined for a total of 16 errors later in the night. in a 18-17 15-inning affair.
Rome (1-1) travels to Beaudry Park to play the Cortland Crush (3-1) on Saturday. First pitch is at 3:00 p.m.
