SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Cortland followed its team name as they crushed the Syracuse Junior Chiefs by a score of 6-0 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Alliance Stadium, Thursday.
Cortland was able to strike first in the top of the third.
Joshua Lopez (Massachusetts-Boston) doubled home Luke Gilbert (SUNY Brockport) to start the scoring. Paul Ludden (SUNY Brockport) capped the inning with a two-out RBI base hit. Ludden was aggressive at the plate swinging on the first pitch of the at bat, and he was aggressive on the base paths finishing the night with three stolen bases on a hit and a walk.
Derek Martin (Southeastern University) kept the two-out rally going as he was able to put a single through the left side of the infield scoring Ludden. The three runs that the Crush got in the third inning was more than enough to get the job done.
Cortland’s starting pitcher Andrew Cartier (Rowan University) tossed five innings allowing one hit and one walk. Then the bullpen put the nail in the coffin as Aaron Edelmon, (Bossier Parish) Blake Demeter, (Keystone) William Glinsberg, (Salve Regina University), and Clayton Jefferies (Lenoir-Rhyne University) all chipped in with a scoreless inning of their own.
Cortland manager Bill McConnell praised his starter saying, “It’s an outstanding effort by a young freshman… who knows he’s got a road to prove himself this summer, and he allowed our bullpen to do what we want them to do.”
Cartier used everything in his arsenal to keep the Chiefs hitters off balance.
“I was pretty much just working off of my fastball, being able to move it in and out,” Cartier said. “The second time through the lineup I started working in a lot of first pitch breaking stuff to get them off the fastball.”
Syracuse’s best opportunity to get on the board came in the bottom of the fourth when they had runners on first and second with nobody out, and their three hitter Zachary Smith (Salve Regina University) coming to the dish. However, Smith tried to move the runners over via a sacrafice bunt, but it resulted in the lead runner being thrown out at third. Cartier induced Syracuse’s Sam Little (Ithaca College) into a popout then got out of the inning after Steven Zimmerman Jr. (East Stroudsburg) grounded out.
“The little things in this game beat you over time,”Syracuse head coach Joe Antonio said about the poor execution on the sacrifice bunt.
After the loss Syracuse is now an even 1-1 on the year while Cortland jumps ahead of the .500 mark and sit at 2-1 on the early campaign.
Syracuse and Cortland get back to action tomorrow at Cortland where the two teams will meet again. First pitch for tomorrow’s game is scheduled for 6:00 P.M at Greg’s Field at Beaudry Park.
