ROME, N.Y. — Imagine showing up as the “new kid” on your first day of school and immediately being picked on by a bully; that is what the Rome Generals had to suffer through during their first game as a member of the New York Collegiate Baseball League.
The Syracuse Jr. Chiefs struck early and held on to beat the Generals 6-2 Wednesday night at Delutis Field, Wednesday night.
A four-run outburst in the top of the first inning gave Syracuse a comfortable lead to coast through the game. Four straight base hits and an error gave the Jr. Chiefs a 3-0 lead before the Generals even recorded the team’s first out in franchise history.
Although the defense and pitching quickly straightened out, it was far too-little-too-late for Rome.
Anthony Seminaris (Mt. San Antonio College) led the way for Syracuse going 2-for-4 with a triple, double, two runs and a walk.
Jimmy Skiff (Purdue University Calumet) earned the win for the Jr. Chiefs after pitching five innings and allowing only two runs. The 6’1 junior out of Dyer, Indiana, struck out five batters and only walked one.
Mitchell Donahue (Montreat College) suffered the loss in Rome’s inaugural game. He lasted four innings allowing four runs on six hits. The lefty from LaGrange, Georgia, walked one and struck out six.
Ricky Sisto (Miami, Ohio) paced the Generals offensively going 3-for-5 with two RBI and three stolen bases.
This is the first time an NYCBL team has represented Rome since the 2011 season. The Rome Indians won the city’s only league title in 2001.
The Generals will stay at home to host the Syracuse Salt Cats Thursday night. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
The Jr. Chiefs return to Syracuse to host the Cortland Crush Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
