ONEONTA, N.Y. — Mike Diorio (Rider) improved to 3-2 on the season, and the Oneonta Outlaws salvaged a doubleheader split (5-3/5-1) with the Geneva Red Wings in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Damaschke Field, Monday.
Diorio went the distance in a scheduled seven-inning affair allowing one run on five hits and three walks. He struck out four. His ERA plummeted more than a run (5.06 to 3.91) in the win.
Oneonta scored three runs in the second inning of the nightcap and never looked back.
Trevor Putzig (Tennessee Tech) reached on an error before coming home on a CJ Krowiak (Binghamton University) RBI-single to tie the game. Jessey Valdez (Dean College) put the Outlaws ahead with a an RBI-double to drive in Krowiak. Tyler Martis (Siena College) tacked on another run with an RBI-single for a 3-1 Oneonta advantage.
Ryan Nelson (Quinnipiac) stepped up to the plate with runners on second and third and only one out in the bottom of the third, and the Outlaws’ lead to 5-1 with a two-run double.
Kevin Elwell (Elizabethtown College) suffered the loss for Geneva. He allowed five runs (three earned) on seven hits in three innings pitched.
Andrew Fischer (Amherst College) pitched a complete game for Geneva in the opener. The right-hander allowed three runs on three hits with two strike outs and walks apiece in his seven-inning performance. The Winnetka, Illinois native improved to 4-2 on the season with a 2.38 ERA
Matt Eastman (St. Bonaventure University) hit an RBI-double in the second inning of game one to highlight a two-run frame that gave Geneva a lead they would never look back from.
A sacrifice fly by Jackson Rhodes (Birmingham Southern College) and Lucas Zilli (Michigan State University) put the Red Wings up 4-0 in the third.
Jordan Bradley (Wofford) led a comeback attempt in the bottom of the third as he drove in two with the first of his two game-one doubles before scoring later in the inning.
Geneva looked ready to keep their hot steak going as they loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the first in game two. An RBI-groundout by Tommy O’Hara (Tufts University) was all they could manage, however, as the Red Wings took a 1-0 lead.
With the game-two win, the Outlaws lowered their magic number to five with five games remaining. Oneonta (22-18) hosts second-place Cortland (26-17) in the first of a home-road-home three-game series with the Crush.
Geneva (20-20) travels to Noyes Park to start a three-game series with the Sherrill Silversmiths (8-35).
Following their respective three-game series, both teams will meet up in Geneva for their final two games of the regular season.
