SHERRILL, N.Y. — The Oneonta Outlaws used the long ball to defeat the Sherrill Silversmiths 10-1 and 13-1 in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Noyes Park in New York Collegiate Baseball League action.
A three-run shot and a two-run home run were hit in the first game, while the second game saw two three-run blasts.
Trevor Putzig (Tennessee Tech U) went a perfect 4-for-4 with four RBI, including a home run.
Oneonta got the scoring started early in the first game. Tyler Bruno (Iona Col) led of the game with a walk. The next batter, Jordan Bradley (Wofford Col) was able to reach base on an error. The Silversmiths center fielder had the ball in his glove, but didn’t have control and the ball popped out, which was Sherrill’s first of four errors in the game.
After the error, Zachary Krider (South Carolina Upstate) singled and brought home Bruno. One of Putzig’s hits and RBIs came after the Krider single. Putzig also singled and Bradley came home. Krider scored later in the inning on a fielder’s choice by CJ Krowiak (Binghamton U).
Sherrill scored its first and only run of the game in the bottom of the second. Michael-Patrick Buckley (Seton Hill U) led off the inning with a double. Buckley advanced to third on a Jake Pendred (Saginaw Valley St U) single and later scored on a wild pitch.
The Outlaws hit their first home run of the day in the third inning. Zack Blonder (Maryville Col) reached base on an error by the shortstop and the next batter, Putzig, singled. Ryan Nelson (Quinnipiac U) hit the ball over the fence to clear the bases and give his team an extra three runs.
Oneonta scored two runs in both the fourth and fifth inning. Putzig hit a home run after a walk to Blonder. Tyler Martis (Siena Col) led off the fifth with a walk. Later in the inning, he scored on a wild pitch. Angel Hernandez (Graceland Col) came in to pitch run for Krider and scored on a double by Putzig.
The game went five innings and the Silversmiths hit into a triple play at the bottom of the fifth to end the first game.
Michael Bunal (SUNY Binghamton) pitched the game for the Outlaws. He only allowed three hits and one run in five innings. Bunal also struck out five and walked one in the win.
Alex Bellardini (Monroe CC) took the loss after pitching 3 2/3 innings, giving up eight runs (six earned) on eight hits. He walked three and struck out one. Buckley pitched the final 1 1/3 innings for Sherrill. He gave up two runs on one hit and walked four.
The second game started out much like the first, with Oneonta striking early and often. Bruno led off the first with a walk. Bradley got a single in the next at-bat. After Bradley, Krider brought home Bruno on a double. The hits kept coming for the Outlaws as Blonder singled, which allowed Bradley to score. Blonder then scored on a fielder’s choice from Putzig.
Oneonta’s first home run of the second game came off the bat of Bradley. Nicholas Spangler (Shippensburg U) led off the second with a single. Martis got on base with a single. Bradley then launched a pitch over the fence for a three-run shot.
The Outlaws scored a single run in the fourth off of a sacrifice fly by Krowiak. Jessey Valdez (Dean Col) scored on the play. Two more runs crossed the plate in the fifth. Nelson reached on a single and later scored on an error by the first baseman. Spangler reached on a single and scored on a fielder’s choice.
Sherrill scored its only run of the game in the fifth. Nick Banman (Ft Scott CC) doubled to lead off the inning and scored on an Adam Nell (Herkimer County CC) putout.
Valdez led off the inning with a single. He later scored on a Krowiak single. Bradley hit his second three-run home run of the game. Krowiak and Martis also scored. Bradley went 4-5 with seven RBIs in the game.
“We’ll give them a better game tomorrow,” said Sherrill head coach Bob Shaffer. “We’ll work hard tomorrow.”
Luke Samson (Lake County JC) got the win after pitching five innings and allowing one run on five hits. He also walked three and struck out two. Matt DePalmo (SUNY Oneonta) pitched the final two innings. He gave up three hits and struck out one.
Nicholas Radich (Pomona-Pitzer Col) took the loss after allowing nine runs (seven earned) in 14 hits in 5 1/3 innings.
He also struck out one and walked three. Buckley pitched a perfect 1 2/3 innings. Nell also pitched and gave up four runs on five hits with one walk. He did not record an out.
Mitch Sloan (Ft Scott CC) went 2-3 with one walk for Sherrill. His college teammate, Banman, went 2-2 with one run scored.
The Outlaws (20-17) and Silversmiths (7-34) play again at Noyes Park. First pitch is at 5 p.m.
