SYRACUSE, N.Y. — It was a short, but successful day for the Salt Cats.
Five runs over the course of the fifth and six innings pushed the Syracuse Salt Cats to a 5-1 victory over the Sherrill Silversmiths in a rain-shortened New York Collegiate Baseball League game at Onondaga Community College on Thursday afternoon.
The Salt Cats were the away team in this game, but the game was moved to Syracuse because of difficulties in scheduling due to recent rainouts.
They benefitted from an excellent outing by starter Jahmoy Williams (Genessee CC).
Williams, normally a reliever, was given his first spot start for this game.
“We worked him up to this point,” manager Mike Martinez said. “He’s earned a start and he could go longer. He did well.”
Williams responded with his longest outing yet, pitching all six innings and getting the win, allowing one earned run on five hits and one walk, recording six strikeouts.
“I just try to pound the strike zone,” Williams said. “Give my team a chance to field the ball and make plays.”
Williams got plenty of help from the Salt Cats bats in the final frames.
Jose “Manny” Colon (Rutgers-Camden) started things off in the fifth with a triple to deep right-center field, then Cameron Dias (Rutgers-Newark) walked.
Matt Mastroianni (SUNY Oneonta) came up and dropped a bunt down.
The throw to first was errant and ended up in right field, allowing both Colon and Dias to score. Mastroianni advanced to third.
An RBI single by Brandon Cornelius (Rutgers-Camden) brought Mastroianni home to make it 3-0.
In the sixth, Lucas Tevlin (Binghamton) ripped a double to the warning track in left.
After Brian Bilello (Concordia) advanced Tevlin to third on a groundout, Colon ripped an RBI double to the gap in left center that made it 4-0.
Dias then hit an RBI single to make it 5-0.
After Sherrill responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth, Syracuse got a sixth run on the board thanks to an Anthony Galanoudis (Molly) double, and an Evan Holland (Florida International) RBI triple before the game was called due to heavy rain.
Tevlin, Colon, and Sherrill’s Zach Taylor (Haverford) all went 2-for-3, and Tevlin added a stolen base.
Connor Bowie (Mt. Aloysius) also added a triple for Sherrill. Luke Johnson (Bucknell) had the lone RBI.
The Salt Cats (20-12) head to Geneva on Friday for a doubleheader against the Red Wings to kick off a critical four-game series that could re-align the top half of the East Division standings.
The Silversmiths (7-24) head to Cortland to start a three game series against the Crush.
