OLEAN, N.Y. – The Olean Oilers defeated the Wellsville Nitros in come-from-behind, walk-off style, 5-4, in a New York Collegiate Baseball League game on July 4 at Bradner Stadium.
After entering the game as a defensive sub in the top of the inning, Edwin Edwards III (Buffalo) came through with an RBI double in the bottom of the ninth to break the 4-4 tie and complete the comeback.
Both pitchers put up zeros for the first six innings.
Wellsville broke the silence with a boom the top of the seventh as Patrick Scholla (John Carroll) smacked a solo shot to put Wellsville up 1-0.
The Nitros got three more in the eighth to go up 4-0 going into the bottom of the frame.
Olean answered.
The first three batters of the inning reached base, and Isaac Dillard (Gulf Coast CC) drove home Olean’s first run of the game with a fielder’s choice. David “Bubba” Hollins (St. Petersburg) then drove home the second run with a sacrifice fly. With two away, Mike Fahrman (Florida) came through with an RBI double to score Dillard, and Aaron Phillips (St. Bonaventure) drove home Fahrman with a single to tie the game.
Joe Nicolace (Nichols) came in to pitch a scoreless top of the ninth to hold the tie and set the stage for Olean.
Up next, the Wellsville Nitros will head home and take on the Niagara Power on Sunday, July 5. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 PM.
Olean will head to Genesee to take on the Rapids on Monday, July 6 at 7:00 PM.
Austin Bizzle (Alabama State) went seven innings, striking out four with no walks for the Oilers.
Schmitt (Concordia) went 7.2 innings with two strikeouts for Wellsville.
Both teams left seven men on base.
Bubba Hollins had two sacrifice hits for the Oilers.
Aaron Phillips had two of the Oilers’ five total hits.
Kenny Collins (Pitt-Bradford) went 3-for-4 with a run scored, an RBI and a walk for Wellsville.
