SHERRILL, N.Y. — Errors plagued the Sherrill Silversmiths as they were swept in a double header with the Syracuse Jr. Chiefs.
Michael Elfreth (Widener U) went 1-5 with three RBI in game two as the Syracuse Jr. Chiefs defeated the Sherrill Silversmiths in New York Collegiate Baseball League action on Sunday afternoon at Noyes Park.
The first game ended 5-1, with the Silversmiths and Jr. Chiefs both committing two errors. The second game got worse for Sherrill as it had seven errors, while Syracuse had two.
In the first game, Shane Trevino (Indiana U-Purdue U) reached on an error, which allowed Justin Healey (Widener U) to advance to third. Healey scored in the next at-bat on a sacrifice fly by Alex Perry (Salve Regina U). Trevino also scored later in the inning to put the visitors up 2-0.
The next inning had another Silversmiths error, which led to a run scoring. Elfreth reached on an error by the pitcher and James Wynne (Dean Col) scored. Samuel Ellinwood (Amherst Col) later scored on a Healey sacrifice fly to center field.
Sherrill got its only run of the day in the sixth. Kevin Jordan (Pomona-Pitzer Col) led off the inning with a single. Jordan later stole second, third and home to give his team a run. Wynne scored in the top of the seventh for the Jr. Chiefs to put the lead back to four runs.

The second game saw an offensive outburst from Syracuse. All of the runs in the second came off of an error by the pitcher. He tried to throw the ball to get the runner out at first, but it went by the first baseman and three runs scored.
In the second, Trevino scored to give Syracuse a bigger lead. Perry reach on an error by the second baseman earlier in the inning and scored on a passed ball. Brian Colbert (Keuka Col) moved up on the passed ball and later scored.
Two runs in the sixth scored because of errors. Danny Walczak (Aurora U) scored on an error by the right fielder. Alex Perry advanced to first base on an error by the third baseman, which allowed the runners to move up one base. Elfreth came home during the next at-bat.
Syracuse added more insurance in the seventh when Walczak hit a two-run home run over the centerfield fence. Brandon Campos (Villanova U) also scored.
Syracuse pitcher Matthew Wood (Salve Regina U) pitched a four-hit shutout.
“Matt threw excellent today,” said Jr. Chiefs Head Coach Matt Colbert.
Colbert also said that Wood is usually a reliever, but was given the start due to the doubleheaders the team has had to play.
“He was efficient with his pitch count,” Colbert said. Wood also struck out seven and walked two. He lowered his ERA to 0.84.
On the other side, Sherrill managed one run in two games. The team is 2-8 in their last ten games.
“We need to score runners,” said head coach Bob Shaffer. “We need to play better defense. We’re a little frustrated with the season.”
Shaffer continued by saying the team is going to be confident.
Nicholas Radich (Pomona-Pitzer Col) took the loss after giving up nine runs (three earned) in 5 1/3 innings. He allowed six hits, walked four and struck out four. William Fellows (St. Lawrence U) also pitched for Sherrill. He gave up two hits, two runs, walked two and struck out two.
