WELLSVILLE, N.Y. — After starting off the season with a 3-for-33 (.091 AVG) slump, Rochester Ridgemen catcher Michael DiViesti (Butler) unloaded going 7-for-15 (.467 AVG) in his last four games leading up to Monday night’s match-up with the Wellsville Nitros at Wellsville Central Schools in New York College Baseball League action.
DiViesti’s hot bat did not cool off against the Nitros. He led all hitters going 2-for-4 with a home run, 2 RBI and a run scored to help lead Rochester past Wellsville 5-1.
Following a walk by Tyler Taute (MidAmerica Nazarene University) in the top of the ninth, DeViesti stepped up and launched a two-run home run to double Rochester’s lead to 4-0.
Nickolas Jensen (Grays Harbor College) earned his second win of the season for the Ridgemen. He pitched seven shutout innings allowing six hits and striking out two. Jensen lowered his ERA to 3.33 on the season.
Adam Schmitt (Concordia) allowed two unearned runs in seven and two-thirds innings, but fell to 0-6 on the season despite his 2.70 ERA. He surrendered three hits and send five down via the strikeout.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth when Devan OBryan (St. Louis CC-Meramec) walked and eventually scored when Aaron Vallance (Wayland Baptist University) reached on a fielding error with two outs.
Vallance singled in the eighth and scored an insurance run for the Ridgemen after the Nitros’ second error of the game allowed Colin Winn (Santa Ana College) to reach base with two outs.
Alexander Stack (University of Dallas) walked with the bases loaded later in the inning to push the score to 5-0.
The Nitros did not go down without a fight as Dylan Rajkovich (Webster University) hit a solo home run to account for Wellsville’s only run of the night.
Christopher Welch (Mississippi College) went 3-for-5 for the Nitros to increase his batting average to .300 on the season.
Wellsville fell to 5-20 and will host Rochester (8-14) in a rematch Tuesday night.
