SHERRILL, N.Y. — Cameron Dias (Rutgers U Newark) delivered a two-out, two-run double in the top of the ninth as the Syracuse Salt Cats rallied to defeat the Sherrill Silversmiths 8-6 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action on Thursday night at Noyes Park.
In the first, Lucas Tevlin (Binghamton U) singled and later scored on a Brian Bilello (Concordia Col) double for the Salt Cats.
The game remained 1-0 until the fifth inning when Evan Holland (Florida International U) hit a 3-1 pitch over the fence for a 2-0 Salt Cats advantage.
Syracuse added to its lead in the top of the next inning. Matthew Mastronianni (SUNY Oneonta) connected on a solo shot of his own. Adam Thoryk (Alma) singled and later scored on a Holland base hit.
Sherrill pushed across a run of its own in the bottom half of the sixth. Zach Taylor (Haverford Col) came home on a Connor Bowie (Mt. Aloysius Col) double.
The Silversmiths exploded for a five-run eighth. Ryan Skalnik (Neosho County CC) and Mitch Sloan (Ft. Scott CC) both got on base to begin the inning. Zack Kesterson (Duke U) singled and Skalnik came home. Jake Dyer (Ft. Scott CC) hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in another run. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Adam Nell (Herkimer County CC) walked to bring in Kesterson. The next batter, Tim Corapi (LeMoyne Col), walked to bring in another run. Kevin Jordan (Pomona-Pitzer Col) scored on a fielder’s choice to give Sherrill a 6-5 lead.

The lead was short-lived as Syracuse scored three in the top of the ninth. Jose Colon (Rutgers U Camden) came in to pinch-hit and got a single. Johnny Knight IV (Walsh U) pinch ran for Colon and later scored on a Chris McGee (Binghamton U) single. McGee and Bilello scored on the Dias double, which gave the Salt Cats the lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, Sherrill had the bases loaded, but were unable to get a run across.
Matthew Colon (Cumberland County Col) pitched 1 1/3 innings to earn the win. He allowed zero runs, one hit and three walks, with three strikeouts.
Tyler Mitzel (Neosho County CC) started the game for the Silversmiths. He pitched four innings and gave up one run on three hits while striking out two. Thomas Burke (Concordia Col) started for the Salt Cats. He went six innings, giving up one run on two hits. Burke walked four and struck out six.
William Fellows (St. Lawrence U) and Dan Shelton (SUNY Oneonta) were the other pitchers Sherrill used in the game. Fellows went 1 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on three hits while walking three. Shelton pitched 2 2/3 innings and gave up two hits and walked one.
Also pitching for Syracuse was Jahmoy Williams (Genesee CC). He pitched one inning and struck out one. Myles Taylor (Coppin St U) gave up all five Silversmith runs. Taylor only pitched 1/3 of an inning. He also walked two batters. Corey Ross (St Thomas U) did not record an out and walked two.
Holland, McGee and Bilello recorded multiple hits for the Salt Cats, while Bowie had the only multiple hit game for the Silversmiths.
Sherrill (4-14) and Syracuse (12-8) meet Friday night at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse. A 7 p.m. first pitch is scheduled.
