WELLSVILLE, N.Y. — There was a time this season when the Niagara Power struggled to score runs. Those struggles are now a distant memory after yet another offensive showcase Tuesday night.
The Power pounded out 21 hits and beat the Wellsville Nitros 9-1 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Wellsville Central Schools.
For the second time in a week, the Power defeated the Nitros on the road by a large margin. Last Thursday they defeated Wellsville 17-4.
Similar to last week, everyone joined the hit parade for the Power. Every starter had at least two hits; catcher Jessep Polk (North Greenville University) led the way with five. Conner Combs (East Texas Baptist) collected three hits in three trips while driving in two and scoring twice.
The Power finally chased Wellsville starter, Bruce Strickland (Felician) in a fifth inning which featured a 2-RBI double from Polk and two more RBI from Ethan Hurt (Trevecca University). Hurt plated four in the game.
The Power continued the attack against the Nitros bullpen with RBI from Gabe Sevigny (Olivet Nazarene University) and Conner Combs (East Texas Baptist University) in the seventh and eighth innings.
Niagara used five different pitchers and only allowed five hits en route to victory. Starting the game was A.J. Bruner (Trinity International University). Bruner threw five shutout innings before handing things over to the bullpen.
Robert Greathouse (Baptist Bible Coll & Seminary), Drew McLochlin (Huntington) and Nick Campe (Olivet Nazarene) each tossed a shutout inning of relief for Niagara. Campe struck out two of the three batters he faced.
Caleb Lang (Cairn) finished with two doubles and two runs scored for Niagara.
Michael Voveris (Hilbert) tossed an inning and a third of scoreless relief for Wellsville.
The Power have now won four games in a row, three of them by more than six runs. They sit in sole possession of first place in the Western Division and have the best record in the NYCBL.
Wellsville (5-17) has the next two days off before they look to rebound Friday night on the road against the Geneva Twins at 7 p.m. The Power return home tomorrow for the first of four games at Sal Maglie Stadium and take on the Genesee Rapids with a 7 p.m. first pitch.
