ONEONTA, N.Y. – A one-two punch on the mound did the trick for the Red Wings on the road Monday.
The Geneva Red Wings defeated the Oneonta Outlaws, 7-2, in a New York College Baseball League game on June 15 at Damaschke Field.
The bottom half of the Geneva batting order got it done for the Red Wings in the second inning. Tommy O’Hara (Tufts) started things with a leadoff single, and moved to third when Tanner Ivey (Alabama A&M) reached base on a wary throw from a bunt attempt. O’Hara eventually scored on a sacrifice fly, and Christian Rosario (Hagerstown CC) came through with a double that would score two. The Outlaws would complete the four-run innings with a Casy Kies (SUNY Oneonta) single that brought home Rosario.
Geneva held strong behind the hard-throwing Andrew Fischer (Amherst), who kept Oneonta hitless through five and allowed just two walks.
The Outlaws wouldn’t stay quiet, as they got things going offensively in the sixth inning.
Following a leadoff single from Tyler Marvis (Siena) and a pair of walks to Tyler Bruno (Iona) and Greg Saenz (Grand Canyon), Tyler Maxey (Tennessee Tech) brought Marvis home with a sacrifice fly to center to put Oneonta on the board. The next at bat, Jordan Bradley (Wofford) smacked a double to score Bruno from second to bring the score to 4-2.
When things got tough for the Wings, they turned to Zack Tomasko (Elizabethtown) in relief, who shut down the Outlaws the rest of the way. Tomasko allowed just one hit and one walk with two strikeouts in his 3.1 innings of relief.
“He had a dominating fastball we had trouble with, but after seeing the same guy two or three times, you may be able to make some adjustments and catch up to it a little bit,” said Oneonta coach Joe Hughes.
“I’m proud of the guys for the way they swung and hung in there against a real tough pitcher.”
The Red Wings got one back as Zach Wingate (Birmingham Southern) doubled and came home after a ball got through the infield during the next at bat.
A couple insurance runs came Geneva’s way in the top of the ninth as Harry Roberson (Amherst) scored on a Lucas Zill (Michigan State) single and Casy Kies came around to score on a wild pitch to give the Red Wings the eventual final score of 7-2.
Each Syracuse team is on deck for these two clubs, as Oneonta will stay home and take on the Jr. Chiefs on Tuesday, June 16 at Damaschke Field at 7:00 P.M. Geneva will have two days off and play the Salt Cats at Onodaga CC on Thursday, June 18 at 6:00 P.M.
The Red Wings played perfect defense tonight as not a single player made an error.
Geneva recorded 11 hits distributed amongst eight different Wings.
Kies, O’Hara and Rosario all recorded two hits for Geneva.
Both pitchers for Geneva totaled 10 strikeouts.
Geneva only left four men on base.
Tomasko recorded his second save. He has now been credited with a save in his last two appearances.
Four runs were scored by the Red Wings while David Ehmen (Wofford) was pitching, but just one of them was earned. Ehmen left today’s game with a 0.64 ERA in three games and 14 innings pitched.
Oneonta walked just two Red Wings all game.
