SHERRILL, N.Y. — Zephan Kash (Mansfield U) had one hit in his five at-bats, but it was one of the most important hits of the night.
Kash drove in the winning run as the Cortland Crush defeated the Sherrill Silversmiths 2-1 in ten innings at Noyes Park in New York Collegiate Baseball League action, Sunday afternoon.
Julian Gallup (Niagara U) reached first for the Crush on a fielder’s choice in the top of the tenth. He advanced to second after Jose Arebalo (Eastern Nazarene Col) was hit by a pitch. In the next at-bat, Kash connected on a two-out single to bring home the game winner.
Sherrill threatened in the home half. Kevin Jordan (Pomona-Pitzer Col) led off with a single, but Tyler Saundry (Niagara U) came out of the bullpen and retired the side to pick up the save Cortland. He struck out one.
Mitch Cavanagh (St. John’s U) took the loss after giving up the winning run. He allowed two hits and struck out two. Matt Yonta (Union Col) pitched a scoreless inning and a third for the win. He gave up one hit, one walk and struck out two.
The Silversmiths got the first run of the game in the third inning. Sean Mullins (SUNY Oneonta) led off the inning with a double. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored when Jake Dyer (Ft. Scott CC). reached on an error.
Cortland tied the game the game in the sixth on a Luke Gilbert (SUNY Brockport) single. Gallup started off the inning with a single and scored three batters later on the Gilbert base hit.
The Silversmiths stranded on a runner on third in both the first and second innings.
Nick Banman (Ft. Scott CC) started for Sherrill and went nine innings before the ball was handed to Cavanagh. Banman gave up one run on seven hits, walking one and striking out five.
On the other side, Shaelim Edmonds (Howard Payne U) started for the Crush and went four innings. He allowed one run on three hits, walking two and striking out two.
Chris Rupprecht (Neumann Col) came in to pitch the fifth and six innings for the Crush. He gave up two hits and struck out one. Crae Watkins (Lincoln U) and Adam Holowienka (Neumann Col) each pitched two-thirds of an inning, striking out one. Cortland used six pitchers during the game.
Jordan was the only Silversmiths player with multiple hits. He went 2-for-4 including a ground rule double.
Arebalo went 2-for-3 for the Crush with a double. Gilbert went 2-for-4 with two singles.
Sherrill (1-8) and Cortland (4-6) will face each other again Monday at Noyes Park. First pitch is at 5 p.m.
