WEBSTER, N.Y. — Hornell’s Dodgers started fast Wednesday night, and that proved crucial as storms cut short their game against the Rochester Ridgemen.
The Dodgers scored three runs in the first inning, and that was the margin of victory, as they took home a 5-2 victory over Rochester in a six-inning New York Collegiate Baseball League game at Basket Road Field that was shortened by Mother Nature’s wrath.
Jacob Bass (Newberry), Jimmy Latona (Mercyhurst) and Brock Eissman (Vanguard) each recorded a single in the top of the first, and all three scored to give the Dodgers a 3-0 lead.
Bass scored on the single by Eissman, and then Latona and the Vanguard attendee scored on a huge two-out, two-strike hit by Garrett Prossner (Baylor) to give Hornell their lead they would not relinquish.
Hornell added runs in the fifth, when Bass and Latona scored yet again. This time, it was Trevor Thompson (Ithaca) providing the big blow, as he hit a triple into the left-center field gap that was just out of the reach of Ryan O’Hearn (Hillsdale).
The Ridgemen were able to claw back with two in the sixth, but that’s all they would get before the lightning came.
O’Hearn started the inning with a single, and then scored on Colin Winn’s (Santa Ana) double play ball at third base.
Shane Soria (Westmont) who took a hit by pitch to load the bases in the inning, scored on Cole Metcalfe’s (Bellarmine) single to left.
Both Soria and O’Hearn finished 2-for-2.
Hornell’s Connor Grey (St. Bonaventure) took the win, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out five Ridgemen batters.
Rochester had started to figure him out as shown in the latter innings, but the weather shut down the Ridgemen’s momentum.
Same two teams, same place Thursday as the Ridgemen and Dodgers play a 12:00 p.m. matinee matchup.
