SHERRILL, N.Y. — Thomas Bond (SUNY Oneonta) and Adam Scott (Wofford) fashioned opposing shutouts as the Sherrill Silversmiths and Oneonta Outlaws split a doubleheader in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Noyes Park, Sunday.
Zack Kesterson (Duke U) backed Bond at the plate as the Silversmiths grabbed the opener, 3-0. Jordan Bradley (Wofford Col) sparked the Oneonta offense in the night cap going 2-for-3 with an RBI as the Outlaws won 6-0.
Kesterson, who knocked two hits in three trips to the plate, hit a ground rule double in the bottom of the second. He moved to third on a single by Nick Banman (For Scott CC) and scored on a Daniel Lowndes (Siena Col) single.
Sherrill added another run in the fourth as Kesterson once again led an inning off with a double. He scored on a Banman single.
Bond needed just 73 pitches (46 for strikes) to complete the win. The right-hander allowed five hits and one walk. Luke Samson (Lake County JC) took the loss after also pitching a complete game. He allowed three runs on five hits with no walks and one strikeout.
Although Oneonta did not get a runner to cross home, manager Joe Hughes offered positives from his players.
“We hit well, but right at other players.”
Sherrill manager Jason Bjork was impressed with his starting pitcher.
“Bond pitched really well and got out of jams.”
The win was the Silversmiths’ first of the season.
“A lot of things came together,” said Bjork. “We had wonderful pitching.”
Scott set down 11 on punch outs in the night cap. The Canandaigua, N.Y. native walked just one and allowed six hits. He induced six ground ball outs and allowed just seven balls out of the infield.
Cody Miller (Wofford Col) led off the third with a ground rule double for Oneonta. He advanced to third on a single by Griffin Barnes (Grand Canyon U). The next batter, Grand Canyon U teammate Greg Saenz hit a double to drive in Miller. Barnes made his way to third. Jordan Bradley (Wofford) singled and brought home Barnes. The final run of the inning came when Taylor Maxey (Tennesse Tech U) advanced to first on an error by the first baseman, which brought in Saenz.
The next three innings saw one run score in each for the Outlaws. In the fourth, Oneonta had the bases loaded with one out. After walking earlier in the inning, Miller scored on a sacrifice fly to center field from Saenz. In the next inning, Maxey crossed home after a single by CJ Krowiak (Binghamton U). Tyler Bruno (Iona Col) hit a solo shot in the sixth. Bruno hit the only home run on the day between both teams.
“Adam Scott had a heck of a game,” said Hughes. “He threw pitches for strikes and had total command.”
The Silversmiths threatened with a runner on third in the second and fourth innings. Scott was able to strike out the next hitter in both situations to end the any chances.
To get back on the winning track, Bjork said the team needs more consistency from the bullpen. Some hitters have started finding their groove, while it is taking others more time.
“The hitters have been trying to shake off rust.”
Nicholas Radich (Pomona-Pitzer Col) took the loss game two.
Luke Johnson (Bucknell U) pitched one scoreless inning for Sherrill.
Jessey Valdez (Dean Col) went 1-for-3 in the first game for the Outlaws. Bruno went 2-for-3 with a double. Barnes added a double for Oneonta.
In the second game, Adam Nell (Herkimer County Col) went 2-for-2 with a walk for Sherrill. Mullins was 2-for-3. Also collecting a hit for the Silversmiths were Jake Pendred (Saginaw Valley St U) and Ryan Skalnik (Neosho County CC).
Oneonta (4-2) will play the Cortland Crush at home tomorrow. First pitch is 7 p.m. Sherrill (1-5) will travel to take on the Syracuse JR Chiefs, also at 7 p.m.
