SHERRILL, N.Y. — The Syracuse Salt Cats scored in the top of the ninth to and held on to defeat the Sherrill Silversmiths, 5-4 In New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Noyes Park, Wednesday evening.
Matthew Mastroianni (SUNY Oneonta) walked to start the ninth. After advancing to second and stealing third, he scored on a single by Anthony Galanoudis (Molloy). Matthew Colon (Cumberland County Col) struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to earn the save.
Earlier in the game, Syracuse broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third. With the bases loaded, Cameron Dias (Rutgers-Newark) walked to bring home the first run of the game. Chris McGee (Binghamton) scored during the next at-bat on a wild pitch by Tyler Mitzel (Neosho County CC).
Rain postponed Sherrill’s first home game meaning tonight was the first home game of the season. During the game, the Silversmiths would get a run back in the bottom half of the inning. Aaron Fritz (Bucknell U) started the bottom half of the inning with a single. After a walk to Bryan McGuire (Utica Col), Zach Taylor (Haverford) doubled to bring in Fritz.
The Salt Cats responded.
After a quick two outs, Brian Bilello (Concordia Col) singled to first in the sixth for the Salt Cats. The next batter, Jose Colon (Rutgers-Camden), hit a home run to stretch the lead for Syracuse.
Fritz scored again for Sherrill. In the seventh, he reached on an error by the second baseman. He stole second and scored on another Taylor double.
The Silversmiths tied the game in the bottom of the eighth off of a Michael-Patrick Buckley (Seton Hall U) home run. Luke Brust (Monroe CC) singled before Buckley hit the home run. The next batter, Tim Corapi (LeMoyne), reached on an error by the shortstop. The Silversmiths looked like they were ready for a big inning, but Eric Frontzak (Alma) retired the side after a sacrifice bunt with a pair of ground balls.
Nicholas Radich (Pomona-Pitzer Col) pitched the ninth and gave up the winning run.
Mitzel started the game for the Silversmiths and pitched eight innings. He gave up four runs on five hits, striking out five and walking three.
Thomas Burke (Concordia Col) got the start for Syracuse. He pitched five innings, walking four, striking out three and giving up one run on three hits. Tyler Clifford (SUNY Brockport) pitched two innings and gave up one run on two hits. He walked one and struck out two.
Frontzak picked up the win.
Buckley and Taylor collected two hits apiece for Sherrill
Colon drove in two for Syracuse.
Sherrill (0-2) looks to win its first game of the season as the Silversmiths take on the Geneva Red Wings at McDonough Park. A 7 pm first pitch is scheduled. The Salt Cats (2-1) will also go on the road. Syracuse plays the Oneonta Outlaws at 7 p.m. in Damaschke Field.
