Xavier WBB Big East road swing ends with loss at Butler

INDIANAPOLIS – Xavier women’s basketball ended its three-game BIG EAST road swing with a 71-53 loss at Butler on Sunday afternoon at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

 

The first half featured five ties and eight lead changes with the Musketeers (15-12, 7-9 BIG EAST) leading, 21-20, with 3:52left in the period. A Sydney Buck 3-pointer sparked an 11-3 Butler run as the Bulldogs (14-13, 10-6 BIG EAST) took a 31-24 advantage into the locker room.

 

Jenna Crittendon led Xavier at the break with eight points. Butler’s Ijeoma Uchendu had 11 points and five rebounds at intermission as the Bulldogs held an 18-14 advantage on the glass. Briana Glover led XU with five rebounds at halftime.

 

Butler never relinquished the lead and led by as many as 22, 67-45, with 2:58 left in regulation. A Crittendon three pointer with 10:42 on the clock in the second half got Xavier within seven, 44-37, before the Bulldogs used a 12-2 run to regain their double-figure lead.

 

Aliyah Zantt led two Xavier players in double figures with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting, tying her career high. The junior guard also dished out a game-high six assists, tying her career high.

 

Crittendon finished with 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting, while Raeshaun Gaffney added eight. Crittendon hit two of the team’s six 3-pointers in the contest.

 

Butler won the battle on the glass, 38-37, with Uchendu pacing the team with a game-high 14 rebounds. Crittendon led Xavier with seven rebounds.

 

Uchendu also added a game-high 28 points on 7-of-12 shooting for her ninth double-double of the year. The senior forward was 14-of-17 from the foul line as the Bulldogs finished the game 20-of-24 from the charity stripe.

 

The Musketeers were 21-of-62 from the floor and 5-of-8 from the foul line. XU also scored 13 points off of turnovers and posted 11 second-chance points.

 

The Musketeers return to action on Friday, Feb. 27 against Seton Hall. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. from Cintas Center. The contest will serve as the team’s annual ‘Play4Kay Pink Game’.
