CINCINNATI – Behind a career-high 26 points from Briana Glover and a season-high team scoring effort, the Xavier women’s basketball team defeated Marquette, 91-72, on Friday night at Cintas Center.
The 91 points is a season-high for the Musketeers (14-9, 6-6 BIG EAST) who entered the contest averaging 63.9 points per game. XU moves to 10-3 when playing at Cintas Center.
The Musketeers opened the game on a 12-3 run behind 3-of-3 shooting, including two 3-pointers. The Golden Eagles (5-18, 1-11 BIG EAST) chipped away at the early deficit and tied the half twice, with the final tie at 26-26 with 7:44 on the clock.
Xavier used a 13-2 run, capped by a Glover layup, over the next four minutes to take its first double-figure lead of the night, 39-28. The Musketeers led by as many as 12, 44-32, with 40 seconds left on the clock before a 4-0 run by Marquette ended the period and made the score, 44-36.
The Musketeers hit 50 percent of their shot attempts in the first stanza, paced by Glover’s 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Jenna Crittendon added 10 points and seven rebounds as XU held a 21-11 advantage on the glass at the break.
The Golden Eagles got within eight four times over the first four minutes of the second period before the Musketeers built a double-figure lead they would never relinquish. Leading 64-53 with 11:18 left in the game, the Musketeers outscored the Golden Eagles, 19-10, over the next eight minutes to take their first 20-point advantage, 83-63. XU led by as many as 23, 87-64, in the closing minutes.
Glover was 10-of-15 from the floor and 6-of-6 from the foul line for 26 points to pace the XU offense. Crittendon finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds, the first double-double by a Musketeer this season. Maleeka Kynard rounded out the double-figure scorers with 16 points.
Xavier finished the night 28-of-34 from the foul line, while Marquette was 20-of-25. The Musketeers were also 30-of-64 from the floor in the victory.
The Musketeers held a 44-28 advantage on the glass, paced by Crittendon’s 11 rebounds. Raeshaun Gaffney and Glover both added six for XU. Apiew Ojulu led the Golden Eagles with nine rebounds.
Kenisha Bell led three Marquette players in double figures with 19 points on 5-of-11 shooting. She was also 8-of-10 from the foul line.
The Musketeers scored 20 more points (50-30) in the paint than the Golden Eagles and had 15 more fastbreak points, 19-4. XU also scored 20 points off of 16 Marquette turnovers.
Xavier returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 8 against DePaul. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. from Cintas Center.
