CINCINNATI – Xavier women’s basketball had its seven-game home win streak snapped on Sunday afternoon, dropping a 54-34 contest to Villanova at Cintas Center. The Musketeers posted a season-low .255 field-goal percentage in the loss and were held without a made three pointer for the first time this year.

The Wildcats (10-8, 5-2 BIG EAST) led from start to finish, opening the game on a 6-1 run before Leah Schaefer knocked down the Musketeers (12-7, 4-4 BIG EAST) first basket of the game at the 16:06 mark to make the score 6-3. A Raeshaun Gaffney jumper two minutes later got Xavier within one, 6-5, but that would be as close as the Musketeers would get on the afternoon.

Villanova led by as many as 12, 25-13, with 3:36 remaining in the first period and led 25-15 at the break. The Wildcats held a 25-20 advantage on the glass at halftime, led by Caroline Coyer’s six boards. Gaffney paced XU with six rebounds.

Villanova’s Kavunaa Edwards led all scorers at intermission with seven points, while Schaefer paced the Musketeers with six on 3-of-5 shooting.

Xavier scored the first four points of the second half to get within six, 25-19, before the Wildcats answered with 10 straight to regain their double-figure advantage, 35-19, with 16:25 on the clock. Villanova maintained its double-figure lead and led by as many as 21 points twice in the closing 10 minutes of play.

Schaefer was the lone XU player in double figures, scoring 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Gaffney added nine points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Villanova won the battle on the glass, 40-34, led by Coyer’s career-high 11 rebounds. Offensively, Edwards finished with a career-high 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting for the Wildcats.

After posting a .321 field-goal percentage in the first half, the Wildcats shot 50 percent from the floor in the second period to finish the day hitting 40.4 percent of their shot attempts. Villanova was also 5-of-8 from the foul line, while the Musketeers were 8-of-12.

Xavier scored six more points in the paint (22-16) than Villanova and had four more points off of turnovers (11-7). Both squads scored four second chance points.

The home loss moved the Musketeers to 9-2 on the year when playing at Cintas Center.
