Just a few days ago against Niagara, Siena started off hot jumping out to a 39-22 lead at half. Evan Hymes led the way with 21 points as the Saints held on for the win, 79-69. Sunday was a bit different for the Saints against Fairfield, a team they just beat just nine days earlier.
Fairfield was able to jump out to an early lead and build up to a 37-32 advantage at the half. Siena was once again lead by Evan Hymes who had 18 points and had three other players in double digits but was not able to battle back all the way falling 79-67.
Siena was able to draw within two as they cut the lead to 63-61 with 7:24 to go, but Coleman Johnson started a run with a three pointer at the 6:18 mark that helped Fairfield pull away.
Marcus Gilbert was able to score 23 points for Fairfield as they outscored the Saints by seven points in the second half by shooting 55 percent from the field. They were hot all night shooting the ball as they also shot 53 percent from behind the arc.
Siena fans had a scary moment in the second half when Saints captain Rob Poole went to the locker room after rolling his ankle with 18:42 to play. He did return to the game and ended up with 17 points but it wasn’t enough for the Saints. Siena falls to 6-9 and on the season and 3-3 in the MAAC conference.
Siena plays next on the road at Canisius on January 16th. They follow that up with another road game at Niagara just two days later.
