Gaffney leads XavierWBB to road win at Marquette

MILWAUKEE – Sophomore guard Raeshaun Gaffney scored a game-high 23 points as Xavier women’s basketball defeated Marquette, 74-71, on Tuesday night at the Al McGuire Center. XU posted a .549 field-goal percentage in the win, the third time this season the Musketeers have hit over 50 percent from the floor.

After missing their first two shot attempts of the game, the Musketeers (9-4, 1-1 BIG EAST) went 5-for-6 from the floor to take a 12-2 advantage over Marquette at the 16:24 mark. The Golden Eagles (4-9, 0-1 BIG EAST) chipped away at the Xavier lead and got within five, 23-18, with 10:38 on the clock before the Musketeers used a 16-9 run to make the score 39-27 with just over five minutes left before halftime.

Marquette got within seven, 43-36, at the 00:20 mark before an Aliyah Zantt jumper as time expired made the score, 45-36, at intermission in favor of Xavier. The 45 first-half points tied a season-high for the Musketeers, while their .613 field-goal percentage marked the second time XU has hit over 60 percent in a half.

Junior forward Jenna Crittendon led XU with 12 points in the first period, while Gaffney added 11. Both players had six rebounds as the Musketeers held a 21-13 advantage on the glass at halftime.

Xavier never trailed in the second half, but Marquette would knot the game at 62 with 3:40 left in the game – the first tie since 2-2 at the 18:34 mark in the first half. The two squads exchanged baskets on the next two possessions until a Briana Glover jumper with 1:29 on the clock gave Xavier a 69-66 advantage.

The Musketeers went 4-for-5 from the foul line in the final 27 seconds of play to go up, 74-68. Marquette’s Arlesia Morse hit a three pointer at the buzzer to make the final score, 74-71.

Gaffney went 7-for-14 from the floor and 8-for-10 from the charity stripe to pace the Musketeers offense. Glover went 6-for-6 from the floor for 14 points, while Crittendon rounded out the double-figure scorers with 12.

Xavier dished out a season-high 19 assists in the win, led by Maleeka Kynard’s season-high seven assists. The Musketeers also went 14-for-20 from the charity stripe.

Xavier won the battle on the boards, 36-30, led by Leah Schaefer’s game-high 11 rebounds. Crittendon and Gaffney both pulled down eight rebounds for XU.

Kenisha Bell led four Golden Eagles in double figures with 19 points. Apiew Ojulu added eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

The Musketeers return to action on Friday, Jan. 2 against Creighton. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. from Cintas Center.
