Musketeers fall at Kennesaw State in closing seconds

KENNESAW, Ga. – Deandrea Sawyers hit a three pointer from the left wing with 1.7 seconds remaining in regulation to spoil the Musketeers second-half comeback and give Kennesaw State a 61-60 win on Monday afternoon.

On the ensuing possession, a Jenna Crittendon half-court shot fell short as Xavier had its three-game win streak end in its final tune up before continuing BIG EAST play. The Musketeers dropped to 8-4 on the year while the Owls improved to 10-2.

Trailing 48-39 with 12:22 left in the contest, the Musketeers engineered a 13-2 run over the next six minutes to take a 52-50 lead – their first lead since the 13:59 mark in the first half. A Raeshaun Gaffney three pointer with 2:06 remaining in regulation put the Musketeers ahead by six, 60-54, before the Owls scored seven unanswered points to end the contest.

Xavier led 7-2 in the opening minutes of the game before the Owls responded with a 12-6 run to take its first lead, 14-13, with 11:28 on the clock. Kennesaw State led by as many as 10 points, 27-17, at the 4:57 mark until the Musketeers scored eight unanswered points, including six from senior guard Maleeka Kynard, to get within two.

The Musketeers would get within one, 32-31, on a Kynard three pointer with 1:02 on the clock before Karly Frye hit a three pointer in the closing seconds of the half to give the Owls a 35-31 advantage heading into the locker room. Kynard led all scorers with 12 points in the first period.

Kynard led four XU players in double figures with a game-high 14 points. Briana Glover scored 13 points, including nine in the second half, while Gaffney added 12. Leah Schaefer scored 10 points to go along with a team-high eight rebounds.

Kennesaw State won the battle on the glass, 49-28, including a 26-13 edge in the first half. Jasmine McAllister led the Owls with a game-high 15 rebounds. Frye led three Kennesaw State players in double figures with 12 points.

The Musketeers had 13 steals in the contest and forced 18 turnovers, converting the miscues into 25 points. Xavier has now had six games with 10 or more steals including the last three.

Xavier returns to action on Dec. 30 in BIG EAST play at Marquette. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m. ET.
