Blue Raiders Top Musketeers on the Road

MURFREESBO​RO, Tenn. – Xavier women’s basketball dropped its second straight contest, falling in non-conference action at Middle Tennessee State, 90-68, on Sunday afternoon at the Murphy Center. A season-high 27 turnovers proved costly for the Musketeers (5-3) as the Blue Raiders (4-2) converted the miscues into 40 points.

The Blue Raiders hit eight of their first 10 shots to open the game, leading 19-4 with five and half minutes gone from the game. MTSU led by as many as 25 (46-21) at the 3:58 mark before the Musketeers scored nine unanswered points to get within 16 (46-30). MTSU’s Olivia Jones hit a jumper with four seconds remaining before intermission to make the score 48-30 heading into the locker room.

Junior forward Briana Glover had nine points to lead Xavier at halftime while sophomore forward Leah Schaefer added six. Freshman forward Anniina Äijänen chipped in four points and a team-high four rebounds.

MTSU maintained its double-figure advantage throughout the second period, leading by as many as 30 (86-56) with 3:54remaining in regulation. Xavier finished the game on a 12-4 run and connected on 66.7 percent (14-for-21) of its second-half shot attempts, but could not overcome 13 turnovers in the second half to pull off the comeback.

Glover finished with a team-high 16 points on 5-for-7 shooting. Freshman guard Kindell Fincher added 13 points off the bench while sophomore guard Raeshaun Gaffney scored 10 points, all coming in the second half, to go along with four rebounds and four assists.

MTSU won the battle of the boards, 32-28. Äijänen and senior guard Maleeka Kynard both grabbed five rebounds to pace XU. Cheyenne Parker and Olivia Jones both had seven rebounds to lead MTSU.

Jones also led four MTSU players in double figures with a career-high 32 points on 12-for-19 shooting. XU posted a .500 field-goal percentage while MTSU hit 54.2 percent of its shot attempts.

Xavier returns to action on Dec. 10 against Monmouth at 11:30 a.m. at Cintas Center. Wednesday’s contest will serve as ‘Field Trip Day’.
