Musketeers fall in BIG EAST opener at St. John’s

QUEENS, N.Y. – Xavier women’s basketball dropped its BIG EAST opener at St. John’s on Wednesday night at Carnesecca Arena. The Red Storm (6-0, 1-0) took advantage of cold second-half shooting by the Musketeers (5-2, 0-1) to remain undefeated on the year.

Xavier led 8-4 in the opening minutes of the contest before St. John’s scored six unanswered points to take a 10-8 advantage at the 14:46 mark. A Briana Glover layup on the next possession tied the half for a third time.

The Red Storm had their largest lead of the period, 21-12, with just under eight minutes on the clock before Xavier went 5-for-7 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the foul line to get within one (26-25) at the 1:31 mark. Danaejah Grant hit the final basket of the half to give St. John’s a 28-25 advantage at intermission.

St. John’s opened the second half on a 10-2 run to take its first double-figure lead of the night, 38-27, at the 13:34 mark. Xavier cut its deficit to nine on the ensuing possession on a Jenna Crittendon layup, but the Musketeers could not overcome a .217 second-half field-goal percentage. The Red Storm took their first 20-point lead with 3:17 remaining in regulation before pushing the final score to 65-42 in the closing seconds on two made free throws by Jade Walker.

Glover scored a team-high 10 points, all coming in the first half. Freshman guard Kindell Fincher added eight points and a team-high six rebounds for Xavier. Senior guard Maleeka Kynard chipped in six points and sophomore forward Leah Schaefer finished with five.

The Red Storm won the battle of the boards, 43-36, led by Amber Thompson’s game-high 14 rebounds. St. John’s also recorded nine more blocks (10-1) and four more steals (8-4) than Xavier.

Grant scored a game-high 23 points for St. John’s on 9-of-13 shooting. Two other players scored in double figures for the Red Storm in Aliyyah Handford (14 points) and Walker (10 points).

Xavier returns to action at Middle Tennessee State on Sunday, Dec. 7. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
