Xavier WBB upends Robert Morris in OT

CINCINNATI – Xavier women’s basketball picked up a 70-65 overtime win against Northeast Conference preseason favorite Robert Morris on Sunday afternoon at Cintas Center. The Musketeers improve to 5-1 on the year.


Tied at 65 with 38 seconds remaining in overtime, sophomore forward Leah Schaefer made a layup to give Xavier the two-point advantage. The Musketeers forced a turnover on the ensuing possession, leaving the Colonials (2-3) with no choice but to foul. Xavier would go 3-for-4 from the foul line down the stretch to seal the five-point victory.


Robert Morris held a 60-57 advantage with 29 seconds remaining in regulation before junior guard Jenna Crittendon hit her only three pointer of the contest to tie the game. Xavier’s defense would force Robert Morris’ Randi Jackson into a bad shot in the closing seconds to force the overtime period.


The Colonials had their largest lead of the game, 53-42, at the 9:38 mark in the second period before Xavier mounted a comeback. The Musketeers went on a 12-1 run over the next five minutes to knot the contest at 54.


The first half saw the Musketeers open the game on a 5-0 run before Robert Morris scored nine unanswered points to take a 9-5 advantage with 16:29 on the clock. The Colonials led by as many as 10 points (33-23) with four minutes left before intermission. Xavier scored the final three points of the period to make the score 33-26 heading into the locker room.


Junior forward Briana Glover scored 11 of her team-high 18 points in the first half. She finished the contest going 5-for-8 from the floor and 7-for-8 from the foul line.


Crittendon added 13 points while senior guard Maleeka Kynard chipped in 11 with a game-high four assists. Schaefer was the final Musketeer in double figures with 10 points on 5-for-8 shooting.


Robert Morris won the battle on the glass (44-39). Sophomore guard Raeshaun Gaffney pulled down a team-high seven rebounds while three other Xavier players added five (Crittendon, Glover, Schaefer).

Defensively, Xavier forced 22 turnovers – scoring 22 points off of the miscues. The Musketeers also held a 38-32 advantage in points in the paint.


Anna Niki Stamolamprou scored a team-high 20 points for Robert Morris to go along with six rebounds. Megan Smith pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.
