CINCINNATI – Xavier women’s basketball suffered its first loss of the season on Thursday night, dropping a 71-62 contest to Virginia. The Musketeers fall to 2-1 on the year while Virginia remains unbeaten with a 3-0 record.
The Cavaliers went 7-for-12 from the floor to open the contest, taking an early 15-5 advantage. Xavier responded by scoring 11 unanswered points to take a 16-15 lead at the 8:59 mark. Virginia would end the stanza on a 22-9 run to take a 37-25 lead into intermission.
Raeshaun Gaffney, a sophomore transfer from Virginia, scored 11 points in the first half for Xavier while classmate Leah Schaefer had a team-high five rebounds.
Xavier cut its deficit to six (46-40) with 14:55 left in the second half before Virginia went on a 15-2 run to take its largest lead of the night, 61-42, at the9:16 mark. Xavier battled back to get within 11 points twice down the stretch before a Jada Byrd three pointer as time expired made the final score, 71-62. The Musketeers outscored the Cavaliers, 37-34, in the second half.
Gaffney led the Musketeers with 15 points while Kindell Fincher added 11 points, all coming in the second half. Maleeka Kynard chipped in eight points and a team-high four assists.
Virginia won the battle on the glass, outrebounding Xavier by 11 (44-33). Schaefer paced the Musketeers with six rebounds.
Faith Randolph scored a game-high 26 points for Virginia on 8-for-14 shooting. Sarah Imovbioh added 18 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
