Xavier WBB opens season with 75-51 win over Wofford

CINCINNATI – The Xavier women’s basketball team opened its season with a convincing 75-51 win over the Wofford Terriers on Saturday at Cintas Center.

Four Musketeers scored in double figures and the Musketeers grabbed 18 steals to maintain a sizeable lead throughout the game.   The Musketeers scored the opening basket before the Terriers ripped off seven straight points to take the 7-2 lead at the 17:10 mark. Xavier answered with a 15-2 run over the next 4:08 to take the 17-9 lead with 13:02 remaining in the first half. The Musketeers used pressure defense in the backcourt to force 14 first half turnovers by the Terriers, leading to 10 fast-break points to help build a 15-point lead, 36-21, with 4:26 remaining in the first half. Wofford closed the half on a 5-0 run to send the teams to the locker room with Xavier leading, 36-26.

Freshman Marquia Turner led the Musketeers in the first with eight points, shooting 50 percent from beyond the arc in her collegiate debut. Senior Maleeka Kynard, a graduate transfer from Ohio State playing in her first game for the Musketeers, added seven points and three steals for Xavier in the first half. Junior Jenna Crittendon and sophomore Leah Schaefer each grabbed a team-leading three rebounds before the half.

Xavier opened the second period on a 9-2 run to build the cushion to 17, 45-28, less than five minutes into the half. Seven points from Kynard fueled a 14-1 run to balloon the lead to 31 with 8:41 remaining. The Musketeers used 19 points, off of 10 second half Wofford turnovers to maintain its sizable lead, prevailing 75-51.

Kynard led the Musketeers with 14 points and five steals. Turner and redshirt sophomore Raeshaun Gaffney each chipped in 12 points. Junior Briana Glover added 10 points, and grabbed six rebounds, tied for team high with sophomore Maddison Blackwell.

Xavier grabbed 18 steals, the most in a game for the Musketeers since a 20 steal performance against Mississippi State on Dec. 20, 2009. Xavier scored 34 of its 75 points off of turnovers.

The Musketeers return to action on Monday Nov. 17 at 7:00 p.m. when Xavier hosts Arkansas-Pine Bluff at Cintas Center.Monday’s contest will be streamed online via GoXavier.com
