PHILADELPHIA – Saint Joseph’s senior Chris Wilson and sophomore DeAndre’ Bembry have been named co-captains for the 2014-15 basketball season, as voted on by their teammates.
Bembry becomes the first sophomore to be chosen a captain in Phil Martelli’s 20 seasons as head coach of the Hawks, and only the second in school history. The previous sophomore captain was Joe Oakes, who captained the famed “Mighty Mites” team in 1936-37.
Wilson is the Hawks’ returning point guard and a three-year starter. He averaged a career-best 9.1 points to go along with 2.7 assists last season for SJU’s Atlantic 10 champion team. The 6-3 guard tallied double figures in 14 games last year and was the co-recipient of the Hawks’ Most Improved Player award. Wilson, from Fayetteville, N.C., has started 99 career games at Saint Joseph’s.
Bembry, from Charlotte, N.C., was chosen as the A-10 Co-Rookie of the Year and the Big 5 Rookie of the Year last season. The 6-6 wing player averaged 12.1 points and 4.5 rebounds per game while shooting 45.8 percent from the field. He tallied double figures in 25 games and set the school’s freshman record for games started with 34.
Saint Joseph’s opens the 2014-15 season on Friday, November 14, when it hosts Fairleigh Dickinson at Hagan Arena.
