SHERRILL, N.Y. — David Wright (SUNY Oneonta) pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on eight hits while walking four and striking out six as the Sherrill Silversmiths split a doubleheader with the Syracuse Salt Cats in New York State Collegiate Baseball League action at Noyes Park. Sherrill took the opener, 3-2 while the Salt Cats rebounded to take the second game, 5-1.
“I didn’t have my best stuff,” said Wright. “My breaking ball made up for my lack of a fastball.”
The Salt Cats got off to a quick lead in the top of the first. Nick DeRegis (Rhode Island) singled to start off the game. He scored in the next at-bat as Anthony Massicci (Canisius College) also singled.
Sherrill took over the lead in the bottom of the first. Kellen Brown (Florida Atlantic U) hit a solo home run in the second at-bat of the inning. Right after, Reid Neal (Florida Atlantic U) singled and eventually made his way across home on a single by Alex Saville (Monroe CC).
Neither team scored for the next few innings. In the top of the fifth, Wright issued back-to-back walks to Jon Borchert (Keuka College) and Tom Nagy (Bentley U). Ryan Roman (Concordia College) scored to tie the game. The next batter, Erik Poldroo (Concordia College) struck out with the bases loaded to end the inning. Earlier in the inning, DeRegis tried to score from second on a Massicci single to the outfield, but was tagged out at home.
The Silversmiths got the run back in the bottom half of the fifth. Bryan Baquer (Monroe CC) led off with a double. He advanced to third and later made his way home on a wild pitch.
Wright got the win in the first game. Cory Craig (California U of Pennsylvania) took the loss.
After a scoreless first inning in the second game, Sherrill scored its only run of the game off of a Saville double. Brown scored after he reached base on a fielder’s choice.
The Salt Cats would take the lead and not look back after a two-run third inning. DeRegis singled to begin the inning. Two batters later, Massicci got a single of his own, moving up DeRegis. Reigning NYCBL Hitter of the Week, Cody LaBadia (Southern Vermont College) singled to bring him home. Right after the second out was made, Massicci scored on a ground rule double by John Galanoudis (Molloy College).
Syracuse picked up another run in the fifth. LaBadia doubled and scored in the next at-bat on a sacrifice fly to center by Borchert.
The Salt Cats added two more runs in the top of the seventh. Roman got a single, followed by a Massicci walk. LaBadia singled and brought home Roman. Galanoudis came up to bat and reached first on a fielder’s choice, which allowed Massicci to head home.
Kyano Cummings (Siena College) pitched a complete game, allowing only one run on six hits, striking out eight and walking one for the win. Mitch Cavanagh (St. John’s U) took the loss after giving up three runs on eight hits, walking one and striking out five.
“Mitch pitched well,” said Silversmiths Head Coach Greg Dombrowski. “He’ll be ready for playoffs.”
As the season winds down, Sherrill has been looking ahead to the playoffs.
“The key is to stay healthy,” said Dombrowski. “We’ll start to throw more position players to give the pitchers a break. I told them to continue to grind and don’t quit.”
DeRegis and Massicci both had two hits in the first game for the Salt Cats. DeRegis scored one run, while Massicci knocked in one batter.
For the Silversmiths, Baquer and Kevin Brice had multi-hit games. Baquer scored one run.
Massicci also had two hits in the second game. He scored two runs. LaBadia led both teams in the second game with three hits. He scored one run and hit in one.
Sherrill (22-19) and Syracuse (21-21) face off against each other again at Noyes Park. Game time is a 5 p.m.
