SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Geneva Twins came from behind to defeat the Syracuse Salt Cats, 4-3 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Onondaga Community College, Wednesday.
Syracuse grabbed the early.
Tom Nagy (Bentley U) and Cody LaBadia (Southern Vermont) combined for back-to-back RBI singles for a 2-1 Salt Cats edge in the fourth.
Syracuse stretched the lead in the fifth.
Matt Mastroianni (SUNY Oneonta) led with a double. Patrick Ortland (Siena) moved the runner with a fly ball and Erik Poldroo (Concordia) delivered with an RBI sacrifice fly.
“We are just fighting to be on top of home field advantage and the playoffs,” Mastroianni said. “Every game we win is going to be big for us, everything is so tight right now so it’s important to get these wins.”
Geneva cut the lead in half in the eighth.
Michael Konyesni (Mt. Union) worked a leadoff walk. Two outs and a wild pitch later, Fernando Garcia (Murray State College) plated the run with a base hit.
Geneva continued the rally in the ninth.
Justin Green (Wabash) and Sean Feeney (Wilmington) reached on back-to-back base on balls. Green gave way to pinch runner Bob Barnett (Widener), and the two came around to score eventually on an infield error.
“Tonight was good evidence, we played good baseball, we were in the game till the end,” Mastroianni said. “They got one more hit than we did and that was the end of the game.”
“It’s very important you want to be hot going into the playoffs and play your best games,” Shaun Caveny, Syracuse Salt Cats pitching coach said. “We are starting to scratch the surface on how good we can be and we will figure it out. We have pitching, we have offence, and we will have defense. That’s important in a game.”
Syracuse (18-17) travels to Cortland on Thursday for a doubleheader with the Crush (12-25). A 5 p.m. first pitch is scheduled for game one.
“This one hurt a little bit,” Mastroianni said. “We just need to bounce back tomorrow, know that we are a good team; we aren’t going to be demoralized or let anybody walk over us. We will be back tomorrow ready to play.”
The Twins (22-12) travel to Rochester for a pivotal doubleheader with the Ridgemen (21-17). First pitch of game one is scheduled for 5 p.m. The Twins hold a three-game lead for second place in the NYCBL’s Western Division and home-field advantage in the upcoming playoffs.
