SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Jimmy Hand (Northeastern) paced a 15-hit attack as the Oneonta Outlaws outlasted the Syracuse Jr. Chiefs, 7-5 in New York Collegiate Baseball League play at Onondaga Community College, Sunday.
Hand collected three RBI on three hits while walking twice and scoring a run.
The run scored for Hand seemed obvious at first when it appeared he slugged a two-run shot to left center for his first home run of the season.
After an argument by Jr. Chiefs coach Chris Haynes, the called was reversed, and Hand was awarded a ground-rule double.
Outlaws head coach Joe Hughes argued the reversal and was quickly ejected from the game.
“I hate to see our player robbed of home run, so I fought for him.” Hughes said after the game
Hand eventually scored on a Ben Mauseth (Grand Canyon College) double. Oneonta trailed 4-3.
Matthew Bolger (U of South Alabama) singled to bring home Kody Ruedisili (Wofford College) which knotted the game at four after five and half innings.
Jr. Chiefs Paul Henshaw (Kenyon College) lost his bid for the win in the sixth. The right-hander went 5.2 innings allowing only a first-inning run before being charged with two more in the sixth. He left with the 4-3 lead in the sixth.
Ryan Contegni (Ithaca College) let up the tying and winning runs to get the loss. In only 0.2 innings of relief Contegni was charged with four earned runs, four hits and two walks.
Daniel Ferrell (Santa Ana College) tossed two scoreless innings out of the bullpen for the win. The right-hander struck out two and walked two. He is 1-0.
Austin Wallace (University of Georgia) started and went three and third for Oneonta. He gave up four runs on three hits. The right-hander struck out five and walked three.
“Austin needs to work on his consistency and get command of the strike zone.” Hughes spoke of Wallace’s non-typical outing. “He has progressed every start this season. He has a really good curve ball and fast ball.”
The Jr. Chiefs held the game close despite times where the Outlaws could have put it out of reach.
Ramon Osuna Sanchez (College of Charleston) hit a hot shot to center field only to see a diving Riley Moonan (Fairleigh Dickinson U) make a diving catch.
The Jr. Chiefs also induced a 4-3 double play to end the top half of the ninth after Oneonta loaded the bases with one out.
But big days for Outlaw hitters prevailed.
All-Star Ben Mauseth (Grand Canyon College), despite hitting into the ninth inning double play, went 3-6 day with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Catcher Carson Waln (Wofford College) went 2-3 with a triple and a two runs scored. All-Star Taylor Jones (North Georgia College & State U) went 2-5 with a run scored.
Ethan Evanko (Grand Canyon) pitched two scoreless innings for the Outlaws.
Joseph Romero (University of Albany) pitched a perfect ninth for his second save of the season.
Syracuse catcher Michael Lanza (Bryant University) went 2-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.
Brandon Wright (Seton Hill) tossed a scoreless ninth for the home nine.
Kevin Neumann (Seton Hill) went an inning and two-thirds without giving up a run.
The Outlaws improved to 20-14 on the season. They trail first place Geneva (20-12) by one game in the Eastern Division.
The J-Chiefs dropped to 12-24. They trail their cross-town rival Syracuse Salt Cats (18-16) by seven games for the fourth and final playoff spot.
The same two teams meet Monday at Onondaga Community College. First pitch is 7 pm.
