SYRACUSE, N.Y. — A trio of pitchers hurled zeroes, and Sam Kim (Hawaii Hilo) paced a 13-hit attack as the Geneva Red Wings owned the Syracuse Salt Cats, 7-0 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at the Onondaga Community College, Saturday afternoon.
Drew Doring (John Carroll) scattered six hits over seven shutout innings for his third win of the season. The right-hander struck out nine and walked two.
“My change-up was working really well,” Doring said. “Just throw strikes, that’s all you have gotta do. Just throw strikes and get ahead of the count.”
Doring faced one over the minimum through the first three innings and lowered his ERA a league third-best 1.26.
Meanwhile Geneva jumped on the NYCBL’s ERA leader Brad Banker (St. Martin’s).
Leading 1-0 in the third, Kim highlighted a three-run stanza with a two-run shot.
“The wind was blowing out and I got into it,” Kim said. “Got a fastball in the zone and I was able to drive it in left center and it got over the fence.”
Kim plated Ricky Gorrell (Kutztown) on the play. Mike Osinski (Longwood) led the frame with a base hit. Jordan Haas (Arkansas Pine Bluff) moved the runner with a sacrifice, and Gorrell delivered with an RBI single.
“Sam Kim is the best hitter in the lineup right now,” said Geneva coach George Schaefer. “He sees the ball really well, and Drew Doring, on the mound threw seven scoreless innings.”
Geneva added a pair of insurance runs in the fourth.
Haas brought home Chris Burns (Alvernia) and Clint Roche (Marietta) with a one-out single. Geneva (17-11) increased its lead over the Salt Cats (16-14) in the NYCBL’s Eastern Division.
“We had a game on them,” Schaefer noted. “It was tough, but a big win today. It gave our guys some confidence.”
Jalen Burks (Neumann) and Jeremy Hutchinson (Neumann) both pitched a scoreless inning in relief.
Andrew Utterback (Alabama A&M) tripled and scored on a Kim sacrifice fly in the first.
Kim finished with three hits and three RBI.
Gorell, Haas, Osinski and Roche all collected two hits for Geneva.
Erik Poldroo (Concordia) led Syracuse with two hits.
Four different relievers tossed a scoreless inning each for the Cats.
The Red Wings have won five straight and will host Olean (9-16) on Sunday. A 3 p.m. first pitch is scheduled at McDonough Park.
