ONEONTA, N.Y. — Alec Romanowski (Stevenson University) earned his second win of the season and lowered his ERA to a team-best 1.45 as the Oneonta Outlaws edged the Syracuse Jr. Chiefs, 2-1 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Damaschke Field, Thursday night.
The right-hander struck out four, scattered four hits and surrendered just one unearned run over six and two-thirds innings of work.
“I was just trying to mix up speeds against them, keep calm, and throw strikes,” Romanowski said following the game.
The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when Jimmy Hand (Northeastern University) delivered a two-out the bases loaded line drive to right field scoring two.
Ben Mauseth (Grand Canyon) reached on an error to lead the inning. Ramon Osuna Sanchez (College of Charleston) walked. Two outs later Tyler Martis (Siena) also reached on a base on balls setting the stage for Hand.
“I changed my walkup song and it helped calm me down,” Hand said about his recent success. “Then I just got some good pitches to hit and put them in play.”
Oneonta took a lead they never surrendered. Hand had two hits and reached base in all three plate appearances.
Nate Stemle (Kentucky Wesleyan College) was able to score on an Outlaws’ error in the top of the seventh making it a one-run game.

Syracuse managed to load the bases with one out against the Outlaws in the eighth. Oneonta called on Daniel Farrell (Santa Ana College) to bail them out. He forced a groundout at home and struck out a batter to end the threat.
“I felt pretty confident,” Farrell said. “Back where I go to college in Santa Ana, that was my role throughout the whole year.”
Farrell stayed in to pitch a perfect ninth inning and picked up his first save of the season. He struck out three batters.
Tanner Whiteman (Onondaga Community College) took the loss for the Jr. Chiefs (8-14). He allowed two unearned runs on four hits. Whiteman walked five and struck out four. He fell to 1-2 but lowered his season ERA to 1.47.
“Execute my pitches and throw strikes,” Whiteman said. “That is what I ended up getting the loss for; I didn’t execute a pitch.”
Ryan Contegni (Ithaca College) pitched two and one-third scoreless innings for Syracuse. He gave up no hits and struck out three.
Tyler Martis (Siena) walked three times for Oneonta.
Oneonta and the Jr. Chiefs met for the third time in as many days Thursday night. Oneonta won game one at Damaschke Field. The J-Chiefs won game two in Syracuse.
The Outlaws have an off day before hosting the Geneva Red Wings (10-9) on Saturday. They are half a game behind the first place Sherrill Silversmiths (12-9).
