SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Samuel Tinkham (Grinnell) hurled zeroes as Geneva’s Red Wings, edged the Syracuse Salt Cats 1-0 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Onondaga Community College, Sunday.

Tinkham struck out eight, walked one and scattered eight hits over seven innings for his first win of the season.

“I was counting on being the guy to go through the games,” Tinkham said. “That’s my plan always. I’m always trying to go at least seven innings.”

Tinkham’s performance helped the Red Wings rebound from a loss on Saturday to the Salt Cats.

“We threw the ball a lot better. On the mound we got a heck of a start From Sam Tinkham,” said Geneva coach, George Schaefer. “Yesterday we were piecing it together and today we managed to throw seven scoreless innings.”

The Red Wings got all the runs they needed in the top of the first.

John Cruz (Dowling) led with a single and moved to second on a Ricky Gorrell (Kutztown) sacrifice. Andrew Utterback (Alabama A&M) plated what would be the game’s only run with a base hit.

Slat Cats starter, Blaise Whitman (Rhode Island) surrendered five hits over eight innings, fanning seven without any walks, but his effort fell short.

“It was a pitcher’s duel. Whitman, threw the ball really well he had a lot of strikeouts. He kept our guys off balance. Same managed to do the same thing,” Schaefer said. “We came on top and it was a heck of a game.”

Cruz, Gorrell, Utterback, Julio Nunez (Alabama A U), and Clint Roche all chipped in one hit for the Red Wings.

Andrew Mercer (Southern Indiana) and Alex Summers Neumann) both pitched a scoreless inning of relief for Geneva. Mercer gave up one hit.

Sean Pisik (Ursinus) pitched a scoreless frame for Syracuse.

Syracuse defeated Geneva 9-6 in Saturday’s action.

The Salt Cats (10-11) hots the Sherrill Silversmiths (12-8) on Monday. First pitch at Onondaga Community College is 7 p.m.

Geneva (9-8) gets a day off before host in Sherrill Tuesday night at McDonough Park.
