ONEONTA, N.Y. — Saturday’s New York College Baseball League Game of Day featured a rematch of last year’s finals. The Oneonta Outlaws hosted the Hornell Dodgers. These perennial powerhouses are both off to hot starts this year and the game could be a preview for this year finale.
Connor Grey (St. Bonaventure University) took the mound for Hornell against Oneonta’s lone local player this year Ben Moxley (Herkimer County Community College). Grey pitched seven strong innings giving up a lone unearned run on two hits. He struck out five Outlaws as Hornell defeated Oneonta 10-3 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Damaschke Field.
Moxley led Oneonta High School to a baseball title in 2012’s state championship game. Moxley only managed to throw 39 of his 78 pitches for strikes. While his defense bailed him out of multiple jams, he only lasted four innings.
Saturday’s game also saw the debuts of two new Outlaws players: Daniel Ferrell (Santa Anna) and Casey Wenzel (Binghamton University). The two suffered some early jitters but showed the potential to be dominant relievers for Oneonta. Ferrell was pitching on the mound almost two hours after he arrived at Damaschke Field for the first time.
Hank Morrison (Mercyhurst College) led the offensive onslaught for the Dodgers. He went 3-6 and drove in four runs. Connor Lewis (Monroe Community College) added on with three hits, an RBI, a run, and a stolen base. Thad Johnson (St. Bonaventure University), Brandon Sandoval (Vanguard University), and Spencer Scorza (Cornell University) all had two hits for Hornell.
The Dodgers extended their lead in the fifth inning to 4-0. The Dodgers batted around in the sixth pushing five runs across the plate.
Kody Ruedisili (Wofford College) and Ramon Osuna Sanchez (College of Charleston) both had two hits for Oneonta. Ruedisili added an RBI double in the bottom of the ninth.
The two will face one another again tomorrow at Damaschke Field. Hornell (16-3) extended their lead in the Western Division to 5 games. Oneonta (7-6) is 2 games behind Sherrill for first place in the Eastern Division.
