SYRACUSE, N.Y. –Blaise Whitman (Rhode Island) hurled seven-plus solid innings as the Syracuse Salt Cats walked off in extra innings with a 4-3 victory over the Oneonta Outlaws in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Onondaga Community College, Sunday night.
Whitman allowed two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out seven. For his second straight start, the righty from Salisbury, Massachusetts went seven innings and allowed two or fewer runs with at least seven strike outs.
Whitman put the Cats in position to win, and Anthony Massicci (Canisius) worked a walk-off walk as Syracuse improved their record to .500 on the season.
“This was a good team,” Massicci said. “We wanted to get a “W.”
Massicci capped a two-out off Oneonta reliever Tresco Shannon (USC-Upstate) and brought home Zach Raczok (St. Martin’s) with the game-winner.
Raczok reached when he was hit by a pitch. Matt Mastroianni (SUNY Oneonta) followed with a single, and Anthony Morino (Mt. Union) loaded the bases with a walk to set up Massicci.
“I was up there being selective,” Massicci explained. “If he threw a strike, I was going to hop on it. But he just never came in.”
Shannon retired the first two batters he faced before the inning unraveled for the right-hander.
Massicci reached on four pitches.
Oneonta knotted the score in the eighth.
Kody Ruedisili (Wofford) plated Tyler Martis (Siena) with a two out single tying the score at three.
Kyano Cummings (Siena) picked up the win. The southpaw retired all three batters he faced in the eleventh.
“Coming into there, you know you have to throw strikes immediately,” said Cummings said. “You know, challenge the batters, see if they can get the hits. Luckily, my team was able to pick me up.”
Cummings threw eight pitches – seven for strikes. He fanned the leadoff batter before getting a pair of groundball outs.
Syracuse took a 3-2 lead in the sixth.
Morino led with a base hit, but was erased when Massicci followed with a fielder’s choice. Nick DeRegis (Rhode Island) walked, and Tom Nagy (Bentley) scored both when he delivered with a triple.
Nagy singled and scored on a John Galanoudis (Molloy) base hit in the second.
The Outlaws scored single runs in the third and sixth.
Ben Mauseth (Grand Canyon) drove in Carson Waln (Wofford) with a two-out single in the third.
Mauseth singled, stole a base and scored on an error giving Oneonta a short-lived 2-1 lead in the sixth.
Ethan Evanko (Grand Canyon) started for Oneonta and struck out 10 in seven innings of work.
Taylor Jones (N. Georgia College & St. U) and Frank DiAgostino (Temple) both chipped in two hits for the Outlaws.
Brandon Agar (N. Georgia College & St. U) worked two innings of relief for the Outlaws. The right-hander struck out six of the seven batters he faced.
Oneonta (4-3) gets a day off before hosting first-place Sherrill (9-4) for a 7 p.m. start at Damaschke Field.
Syracuse (7-7) travels to Geneva Monday night for a battle with the Twins (6-5). First pitch at McDonough Park is slated for 7 p.m.
