SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Shane Cochran (Saginaw Valley State U.) hurled a one-hitter as the Syracuse Salt Cats downed the Cortland Crush winning 5-0 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Onondaga Community College.
“That’s probably the best game I have ever pitched,” said Shane Cochran of the Syracuse Salt Cats.
Cochran struck out two and walked one. Going all nine innings definitely paid off not only for Cochran, but for the whole Salt Cats team.
“Right after the third inning I was thinking, don’t give up a hit,” Cochran said. “Fast ball, curve ball were working for me today. Fast curve slider, that was working. The only one that didn’t work was my change up. That’s the one I gave up the hit on.”
Cochran, going with his gut, and nothing else, made everyone proud.
“We pitched pretty well. All the credit goes to Shane. I didn’t really do anything tonight, Shane did it all,” said Shaun Caveny, pitching coach of the Syracuse Salt Cats. “He was on his game, pounded his own the entire night.”
It wasn’t just good pitching the Salt Cats needed, they needed to make runs. Both the Salt Cats and Crush went five innings with very little hits and no runs. It wasn’t till the bottom of the sixth inning when Tom Nagy (Bentley U)drove in three with a triple.
“He was throwing pretty hard and I was looking for something in the zone that I could drive,” Nagy said. “He threw the first pitch and that was that. I just want to do anything that will help the team.”
Jon Borchert (Keuka) started the rally with a hit to load the bases as Anthony Massicci (Canisius) advanced to second, and Nick DeRegis (Rhode Island U) to third. Setting the stage for Nagy who cleared the bases.
The Salt Cats added insurance runs in the next inning. Julian Bilodeau (Franklin Pierce U) led with a triple. One out later, Massicci delivered with a sacrifice fly.
“We put together a completely different game today. It was a great team win, Shane threw a great game, and then we made all the plays and hit when it counted,” Nagy said.
The Salt Cats (5-5) will be playing today, 7 PM against the Geneva Red Wings (3-4) at Onondaga Community College.
