SHERRILL, N.Y. –The weather might have been chilly, but Ben Mauseth’s (Grand Canyon U) bat was not. Mauseth went 3-for-5, with five RBI, including a three-run home run, as the Oneonta Outlaws beat The Sherrill Silversmiths 6-1 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Noyes Park, Thursday evening.
Taylor Hicks (Georgia) and Marc Iseneker (St. John Fisher) pitched well for their teams in the beginning of the game, keeping the contest scoreless. Mauseth broke the tie with a single in the top of the fourth for the Outlaws plating Frank D’Agostino (Temple U) and Matthew Bolger (South Alabama).
The Silversmiths had good chances in the bottom half, but two outstanding plays by the leftfielder, Cameron Crawford (North Georgia Col & St U) and third basemen, Daniel Fickas (South Carolina Upstate), ended any attempts Sherrill had of generating a run.
Oneonta added another run off of the bat of Ramon Osuna Sanchez (Charleston). Osuna Sanchez hit a solo shot off new pitcher Dominick Pisciotto (St. John Fisher) in the fifth, which was the only run for that inning.
The Outlaws added three more runs in the top of the sixth. Mauseth continued his hot hitting with a three-run bomb to add insurance to the lead. Bolger and Kody Ruedisili (Wofford Col) scored on the homer, along with Mauseth. This home run also came off Pisciotto.
Sherrill had a tough time figuring out starting pitcher Hicks. He tossed seven scoreless innings to earn the win, while striking out eight and allowing three hits. “The starter threw well,” said Silversmiths Head Coach, Greg Dombrowski.
Tresco Shannon (South Carolina Upstate) came on in relief of Hicks at the beginning of the eighth. The Silversmiths were able to figure out this Outlaws pitcher, as they scored their first run in the eighth. Alex Saville (Monroe CC) led off the inning with a hit. The next two Sherrill batters, Bryan Baquer (Washington College) and Ellington Hopkins (Monroe CC) moved the runner with ground outs. Reid Neal (Florida Atlantic U) got a hit, which allowed Saville to score. Neal led the team with two hits in this game and leads in the team with a .533 batting average overall.
Shannon walked the first batter of the ninth, but pitched a scoreless inning to end the game and secure the win for the Outlaws.
Iseneker received the loss for the Silversmiths. He also struck out seven batters. Anthony Rizzo pitched three strong innings for Sherrill at the end of the game, not allowing a run. “Rizzo did a nice job eating innings for us,” said Dombrowski. “The last three innings were good.”
Dombrowski said that the pitchers have to work on walking batters. Iseneker walked five batters and Pisciotto three. Some of the runners ended up scoring, which hurt the Silversmiths in the end. He also said that the team didn’t make adjustments to the pitching of Hicks until the third time through the lineup.
The Silversmiths have a chance to redeem themselves, as Sherrill (2-2) and Oneonta (1-0) face each other again tomorrow. This game is in Oneonta at 7 p.m. at Damaschke Field.
