SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Kaden Shaffer (Fort Scott CC) paced a 17-hit attack as Sherrill’s Silversmiths pounded the Syracuse Salt Cats, 14-3 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Onondaga Community College, Tuesday night.
Shaffer went 5-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. His two-out double in the first got the Smitties rolling, and the green never looked back. Shaffer singled and scored in the third as Sherrill pasted numbers on the board in each of the first five innings.
Austin Bouse (LeMoyne) tripled home Kevin Brice (Pomona-Pitzer) and scored on a Michael Aiello (Wisconsin-Milwaukee) sacrifice fly as Sherrill grabbed an 8-2 lead in the fifth.
Mitch Cavanagh (St. John’s) highlighted a six-run ninth with a bases loaded triple as the the Smitties put the game out of reach.
Brice collected two hits, scored three runs and drove in a run.
Bryan Baquer (Washington College) added two hits, two runs and two RBI.
Bouse scored twice and drove in two.
Tyler Clifford (SUNY Brockport) struck out two and walked one for the win.
The past two games left the Salt Cats feeling confident giving them a 2-0 record for the season. Unfortunately, after going against the Silversmiths they realized that maybe they can’t be too confident.
“Every ball we hit went at somebody,” Salt Cat coach Mike Martinez said. “They hit balls hard that went in the gaps. We sort of flattened up, and fell asleep a couple times.”
Matt Bell (Palm Beach Atlantic) took the loss. The right-hander went three innings.
Andrew Congleton (Mesa CC) came on in the fourth for the Salt Cats.
“The biggest thing tonight was command,” pitching coach Shaun Caveny said. “We didn’t command the strike zone, we didn’t execute the strike zone.”
Matt Mastroianni (SUNY Oneonta) had two hits for the Cats.
The Salt Cats fall to 2-1 on the season.
They aren’t giving up just yet, losing has given everyone a positive outlook.
“The pitching staff we have is good. When we get back on the mound, we will be good the next time,” Caveny said.
The same two teams meet Wednesday at 7 PM.
“We have seen everything they have so we just have to put it all together and we can beat them,” said Jon Borchert, designated hitter of the Syracuse Salt Cats.
